5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Metalcore Band At Their Best, May 11, 2009
This review is from: Arise And Conquer (Audio CD)
If you're into heavy metalcore at all, "War of Ages" is not a band to miss. Leroy and the band are at what I call "top, TOP form" on this album I can only call classic WOA. Lyrically, these guys are keeping it smooth (as always) with songs about salvation, the consuming power of Christ, keeping the faith, and not heeding temptation. Even if you aren't a Christian, you'll sense a distinct and positive power in this music that's impossible to deny. I'm an avid listener, and I've yet to find heavy metalcore that radiates this kind of positive power.

Musically, "WOA" is playing a bit further in the metal realm (less "Demon Hunter" more "Becoming the Archetype" meets "August Burns Red." Although, I hesitate to draw comparisons, because "War of Ages" is something completely distinct all by itself.

BOTTOM LINE:
If you like heavy metal, classical, brutally catchy hard rock all wrapped in a beautiful (Christ honoring) package, WOA will not only be your cup of tea but your crumpets and strawberries as well.

OTHER RECOMMENDED ALBUMS:
Any of WOA's other albums (each a masterpiece.)
Messengers-August Burns Red
Physics of Fire-Becoming the Archetype
The Triptych-Demon Hunter
With Roots Above and Branches Below-The Devil Wears Prada
Wars and Rumors of Wars-The Chariot
Lost in the Sound of Separation-Underoath

When I first heard these guys I knew they had some serious talent on their shoes -- what?--, and this cd, to my incredible un-disappointment, has been such an amazing testament to that hunch. this record is hard, fast, creative, melodic, and full of foot-stomping awesomeness that will get your adrenaline flowing like white water rapids. no joke. I love this band, and I love this cd. CHECK IT OUT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars these guys are primed for some serious rump-kicking, August 29, 2008
This review is from: Arise And Conquer (Audio CD)
right from the start, when these guys yell "All Consuming Fire", you know that it is going to be a slobberknocker. on this release, it sounds as if they are mixing melodic death metal with metalcore. I have been a fan of this band for two years and they really deliver the goods. they prove that you can be a Christian and still deliver a beatdown. they are uplifting just like their labelmates Flee The Seen. Facedown has a bright future ahead of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding improvement from the last few albums!, July 29, 2008
This review is from: Arise And Conquer (Audio CD)
War of Ages have come a far way since the original debute album, which was a very weak release. Fire in the Tomb was a great redemption for those songs and the band. Pride of the Wicked was even better. And this album showcases the band's improved skills across the board. Tight playing, great songwriting. Like the leads during breakdowns so it adds spice and flavor for all the metalcore haters. The screams are still more on the hardcore side but have improved and have a bit more brutality to them...but not much. My only complaint is the same complaint I have for all metalcore acts - they need cut out the clean speaking/singing parts. In rare cases can a band pull off doing both, All That Remains being one of the few cases. All though War of Ages does a good job of keeping it to a minimum. Anyways, this is a GREAT improvement for the band and it's also one of the better and more accessible metalcore releases this year. If you're a fan of As I Lay Dying you'll probably enjoy this seeing as it's produced by Tim Lambesis.

From the first song to the last I was impressed with these guys. The music is complex, but not too dissonant. The vocals are also great; not harsh or shrieky. They really nailed it. Great CD, great band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh my god, yes!!, November 27, 2009
This review is from: Arise And Conquer (Audio CD)
For people who don't want a whole band rundown, this cd is freaking awesome! If you like metal in any sort of sense, buy this cd. Their beginning effort was awesome, but sometimes i felt too much hatebreed genre in it. Don't get me wrong, I like that music, but I want technicality. This cd is from beginning to end absolutely amazing beginning to end with endless guitar solos and technicality. I can't say more about this album other than its freaking amazing. To those of you who like unearth, children of bodom, killswitch engage, my hero is me, threat signal, as I lay dying, I want to say a million bands but you catch what I'm saying listen to these guys@!!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best in Christian metal core!, June 9, 2009
This review is from: Arise And Conquer (Audio CD)
War of ages is the most talented Christian metal/metal core bands going right now right alongside others like haste the Day, living sacrifice, and becoming the archetype. The music style is very similar to other bands in the same genre such as as I lay dying but the formula works very well on this album. The previous album "pride of the wicked" show cased some serious talent and great Christian lyrics but was missing that special something this record has.
For some reason whenever I pop this album in I feel like Gods speaking to me through most of the songs. Songs like "through the flames" are semi melodic but def heavy enough to appeal to the hard core fans.
Other tracks like "deception of strongholds" start of slower but build up awesomely. If you like Christian metalcore or metal music in general you'll love this cd, trust me! There are a few okay tracks but 3/4 of the album is killer enough to warrant this record 5 stars!

Def down load: Through the flames, deception of strongholds, the awakening

for fans of: As I lay dying, living sacrifice etc

4.0 out of 5 stars quite good...but not great., August 20, 2008

I would say that War of Ages excels in almost every area of musicianship. they are surely one of the top bands out there in this genre. I would say, however, that I am a bigger fan of the first cd they put out--the original not the re-recording. Whether it is the difference in members in the band or just the extra divine illumination they received on their self-titled release, a little is to be desired in the past two of their releases. On its own though, this cd is pretty darn good, and still reveals the possibility of a bright future.
