About the Author

AN INTRODUCTION BY THE AUTHOR:

This collection of poems is about love, loss and transformation that came out of the personal struggles in my life. After countless attempts to cope with and understand those struggles, I found that poetry was the only way I could make sense of and ultimately rise above them. I heard many similar stories from others about their inner turmoil and suffering. But when we shared poetry, we felt a deeper sense of kinship on a more soulful level.

For me, poetry is a profound expression of the soul and reflective of my philosophy about life, poetry and writing in general. The title Arise and Shine: Laments of the Darkness, Songs of the Light expresses my belief that most of us can transcend our personal struggles and how we may conquer our greatest fears. This book illuminates the duality and illusions of opposites... the dark and ...the light.

This book is a visual journey through poems that range from Solitary Tears to Transfiguration and every transformative experience along the path to the formation of a personal presence through the power of one s voice. The purpose of writing it was to provide both enjoyment and inspiration to those who have or will encounter challenges as well as those who have overcome them. For those of us who have wrestled their inner demons and triumphed in the end, I believe you might relate to the losses and overcoming them that are contained herein. I also trust that this collection of poems can provide guidance and hope to those still struggling to find their unique voice.

As a licensed psychotherapist for over 25 years, I ve witness firsthand a myriad of broken relationships, depression, addiction and the correlating sorrow involved for all concerned. I, too, struggled with my own issues with depression and serious physical challenges as well as lost love and deep sorrow. Though over the years, I have facilitated positive outcomes for people in crisis, I decided to write about these challenges and my own as a universal via verse.

I hope you enjoy the book!

With a delicate yet purposeful hand, Laura Schultz has crafted a collection of poems that are immediate and timeless. Beautifully fragile yet laced with strings of hope, the poems are emotionally true and relevant to the heart as Laura asks us to dive a little deeper and stretch a little farther.

Highly recommended.

Laura Shultz enchanting collection of poems is a powerfully evoking exploration into the human psyche. We feel the beauty and joy of life as well as the pain and suffering through her creative literary art. As a reader I could relate to the essence of each beautifully crafted poem, and experience all emotions of what makes us who we are today.

Rise and Shine: Laments From the Darkness, Songs of the Light, is a timeless work of art, which will undoubtedly be savoured by all who love great poetry.

Ms. Schultz provides us with a theme of how opposites weave in our lives. Solitude and conjoined souls, despair and arousal, and sadness and light. These opposites form a Bach fugue, appearing again and again with different twists enriching our lives with the music of words. We all go through these phases of certainty and confusion. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Arise and Shine: Laments from the Darkness, Songs of the Light is a collection of stunning poetry by a gifted poet. Schultz's work is honest, courageous, haunting, provocative, beautiful, and entirely relatable. The first part of the book, "Laments from the Darkness" takes the reader to a very personal place that most of us have visited. While writing of depression, sadness, lost love and so much more, Schultz embraces the darkness while wrapping her arms willingly around the pain. She speaks of truths that plague and define us all.

In "Songs of the Light," Schultz brings the reader along as she climbs out of the darkness, rediscovering nature's miracles, letting go, finding love, and rejoicing over tiny bursts of sunlight that were previously unable to be seen or appreciated.

The poet brilliantly explores the themes of darkness and light with glorious imagery and clarity of thought. Complementing Schultz's words are paintings by Ruth Schultz Rudolf and photographs by Anton Mueller. All combine to make a truly special book. I have already read it multiple times, each time discovering new treasures, as I suspect will be the case with many readers. A true work of art.

This is an unforgettable collection of poems that delve deeply into the psyche to expose our darkest secrets as well as our brightest hopes. Through them the writer guides us on a spiritual journey across the bridge that hangs precariously over fear and despair and then brings us safely back to trust and faith. The complex cadence and alliterative allusions in these poems reveals something new at each reading and I always keep a copy close at hand. And once you've read them I think you will too.

Reading Arise and Shine is like being led through a dense forest to the light as it peeks through the clustered leaves. Through the depth of melancholy and the height of hope, I felt connected to the thought provoking meanings of words, beautifully written and expressed.
