More About the Author

As a child, Wayne Basta was introduced to science fiction at a young age by his father. Mainstream hits like Star Trek and Star Wars were followed by old Tom Swift novels and then classics like Asimov and Clarke. Growing up on Florida's space coast only served to fuel his imagination and love of space, science and adventure.

At the age of 9, his family got their first home computer, an old Macintosh Plus, and he immediately used it to start writing science fiction adventure stories. He continued writing as a hobby all the way through college at the University of Florida, where he initially pursued a career in the US Navy until an injury changed his plans. Wayne then spent several years teaching high school and working in the education non-profit sector before coming back to his old dream of writing.

Wayne currently lives in Houston with his wife, son, and dog. He remains a fan of geek culture, board games, video games, fantasy, science fiction and all around silliness.

I'm not a "fast reader", per se, and get bored very quickly with most books, but this little ditty had me coming back for more.
Brev Tanner
I recommend the book to who all who love sci-fi and/or adventure and/or a fun and easy read.

Aristeia is the first book in what is looking to be a great series. It was a quick easy read with subtle humor thrown in. There were NO dry spells where you were tempted to flip through the pages to get to the action part. The book flowed very well and I quickly became emotionally involved with the characters. I look forward to the second part of the series. Please hurry up and finish writing it!

Sometimes I'm looking for a good, entertaining space opera, and Aristiea fit the bill perfectly. On top of that, it also raised some interesting and deeper questions about loyalty that made it stand above the average whiz-bang interstellar adventure novel.

Above all, it's a well written book, especially on two counts: plot and characterization. I'm always disappointed when I can tell where a book is going to end up after the first couple of pages, but Aristiea defied all my expectations. It plays around some standard sci fi narrative ruts, but never falls into any of them. I was genuinely surprised at the twists and turns of the story, and that made it a fun read.

Second, I thought the characters were exceptionally well drawn. They weren't just cardboard cutouts. They had different ideas and opinions and perspectives, and they were handled with equal measures of sympathy and complexity. It wasn't just righteous good guys against evil bad guys, with no one able to see outside their narrow range. Characters, particularly the main one, actually change and develop. One of the things I liked best about the book was getting to know the core cast of players.

As I said above, the book is also more about blaster fights and space battles. It's also saying something about the nature of allegiance, to friends, to family, and to governments, that seemed both timely and compelling. Again, I enjoyed this theme mostly through the characters' (primarily Maarkean's) development.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this book, both as a fun read and as an exploration of some important issues around loyalty.

This is a very ambitious book. The universe and characters have a lot of depth with lots of different alien races. This would be great for an RPG sourcebook, but not so much for a novel. Some of the passages look like they could be pasted into an alien beastiary without much effort. Sadly, many of these sections could have been struck completely from the novel and still left the plot and characters intact. My estimate put this book at over 120,000 words. Probably 20,000-30,000 could have been cut without ruining the essence of the work.

Fortunately, the tone sets it apart from most scifi, which helped pull me along. While most scifi feels like an epic sea battle or philosophical ode to technology, this book goes for a geopolitical/guerrilla vibe. This means you don't see a space battle until halfway through the book, but gives the ground combat sections a little more grit. If anything, I would enjoy seeing more of this down-and-dirty style with a scifi twist, rather than the more epic sections that aren't too different from most scifi.

This book appealed to the gamer geek in me; the guy that can rattle off the strengths and weakness of the races in Tolkien and Star Trek. But, it sustains a skim better than a thorough read. If you can skip over passages to get to the good stuff, this book will entertain you for a few hours.

Good:
+Epic universe. Lots of alien races.
+Deep characters with fleshed out histories.
+Unique tone. Che Guevera fighting the Federation with a bit of Han Solo thrown in.

Bad:
-Prose bloated with descriptions of races and history that have no bearing on the plot.
-Passive voice slows any good description.
-Could use more suspense, especially in the first chapter.

I'm the first to admit that I wouldn't immediately grab a sci-fi book off the bookshelf to read, but I'm very glad I gave this one a chance. This book brings about some very interesting takes on morality and government control, but this doesn't detract from the action-packed space battles. Basta draws you in to his world immediately with the detailed descriptions of the different races and their relationships with one another, as well as painting in-depth pictures of the different worlds. The characters are very well developed and I found myself immersed in their world, rooting for Maarkean and his crew to prevail. This book is exciting from start to finish and whilst one may think the technical details may proove too complex for your average non-sci-fi savvy reader, Basta uses an appropriate level of detail that will appeal to fans of all genres. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I really liked the way this story unfolded at a quick pace, and I liked the skillful way that Basta immersed me in his universe. Aristeia is definitely one of those books that, when I put it down, I blinked around the room in surprise because I thought I was in another world. Other reviewers seem to have already commented on the storyline, so I will just add that the book has some elements that I particularly enjoyed: a recurring exploration of ideas of tolerance and racism, a deliciously personal window into the characters' changing emotions, and some funny bits that pop out when I wasn't expecting them. Nothing seemed cheesy or unconvincing in this story. I eagerly await the second installment.
