5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful As Always!
Brant Asher is an American football star who has just inherited the title of Viscount Asherwood. In order to inherit the house as well as the money, he has to marry Daphne, his VERY distant cousin. The problem is that neither one ever wants to marry, especially not each other. Afterall, he's an American and rude and has no manners. She's very English and stiff laced...

1.0 out of 5 stars definately not one of her better ones....
like other reviewers I'm a Coulter fan, mainly the Historicals but some contemporaries too-this one I couldn't even finish. Maybe it was the football story line-I'm no sports fan-but that's too easy an out. The characters-one dimensional, so trite and formulaic(sp?). I finally gave up the ghost after 80 pages. Maybe it was the football story line-I'm no sports fan-but that's too easy an out. The characters-one dimensional, so trite and formulaic(sp?). I finally gave up the ghost after 80 pages. The storyline-about the marriage or no estate-would have made more sense in a historical, but just seems silly in a contemporary. I agree with another reviewer-this one was NOT up to "Coulter standards" I'm sorry to say..

If you do decide to chuck convention and buy this book anyway-buy it from a used Amazon seller for a penny-that way you won't be out too much dough.

The problem is that neither one ever wants to marry, especially not each other. Afterall, he's an American and rude and has no manners. She's very English and stiff laced and proper. Until they DO marry and fall in love.

Even though this is a contemporary, it reads like a historical with it's setting mostly in England and it's romance. I really loved this book, as well as everything that Catherine writes. Do try this, I think you'll like it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Put the book down slowly on the ground and back away, August 2, 2002

This review is from: Aristocrat (Mass Market Paperback)
Catherine Coulter is one of my favorite romance authors, but this book has to be the worst she's written in terms of plot and character. Her 'hero' is actually cruel at one point. Throughout the book, in the guise of being a 'real man', he expects the 'heroine' to do all the compromising and sacrificing while he feels noble for actually loving and marrying her. And she accepts it! I had to read this book twice just to be sure I actually remembered how awful it really is. Never again.
To top it off, it's like Ms. Coulter dashed this off in a weekend and called it good. No emotional investment in the characters, no clear resolution of conflicts. I seldom meet a book I don't like, but this is one of them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too good, but not horrible, either, July 21, 2003

I'm usually a fan of books like this one, but I just could not get into it. I eventually finished it, but not before developing a major dislike for one of the main characters - Brant Asher. Yuck. He symbolized everything I don't like about some men - mostly his arrogance and obsession with sports. If they hadn't been fixing up that beautiful English home, I would have been really lost...

Sorry - just not my idea of an enjoyable read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy Read, July 31, 2000
By A Customer

This was an easy read, but I was somewhat bored with the plot. I needed a little more action and twists. The serious car accident was played off in a page and 1/2. Not normal Coulter standards.

2.0 out of 5 stars not worth one's time, June 25, 2006
By
This review is from: Aristocrat (Mass Market Paperback)
The book, though contemporary, is a throwback to both the romance novels of the 1980s and historical romances. The girl is virginal and shy, and the rich, wealthy, powerful male comes to care for her, falls in love, and brings the girl out of his shell.

The book's somewhat realistic, in that the guy sometimes lashes out, and says incredibly stupid or cruel things. Some readers find this provides a less escapist experience though.

Some parts are adorable. The heroine, despite her British heritage, becomes a huge American football expert. More parts are simply dull, or perhaps eyeroll-inducing. The execution is not good enough to rise above the cliches. Examples include the heroine's Cinderella transformation, a case of mistaken identity, and a vamp's attempted seduction of the hero.

The book's not that bad, but it's still not worth one's time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sheer delight!!!, May 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Aristocrat (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was so unexpected and surprising, it tickled me to my very toes! I have read 30 of Catherine's books in a just over a month, and this one is one of my favorites. Just the thought of a modern day sports star having to deal with an old English style will, was in itself a brilliant concept! This book had me laughing hysterically and sitting on the edge of my seat to see how it turned out. I positively LOVED IT! Catherine, you are truly an artist extraordinary!!

2.0 out of 5 stars very bad and boring, June 14, 2001

This story was so boring. The romance between Daphne and Brant was so dumb that I swear I almost passed out from boredom. Daphne is such a weak female character unlike the Sherbrooke women or Helen Mayberry or Jack. Brant is such a jerk. This was very disappointing. Try it if you must, but don't say I didn't warn you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny and Enjoyable!, June 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Aristocrat (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read almost all of Catherine Coulture's books and this is one that I went out and bought even though I had already read it just so I could have it to read again. I usually do not like reading books that have football in them because I'm not that much of a sports fan, but this one was great. If you like this one I suggest Impulsive by Catherine Hart, that had football in it too and kept me laughing through the whole book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Worth Your Time, April 7, 2008
This book was not up to par for Ms. Coulter. It was very dry and slow. There was not much of a plot and was missing much. I would not recommend nor read again.
