From Library Journal

The focus of this novel is Howarth, an English stately home. The Marquess of Arlington and his wife will do nearly anything to keep ithe, because of his attachment to it, she because, as a middle-class girl, it establishes her aristocratic status. Lord deConroy, whose ancestor had owned Howarth and gambled it away, will do anything to get it back. In the face of his own poverty, the enormous expenses of upkeep, the rapacity of the tax collectors, and the determination of deConroy, the Marquess nevertheless restores and holds his home. He is willing to let his son make a disastrous marriage that will keep the estate in the family but finds that there are moral limits to what he will do for Howarth. A high-class soap opera with a ready-made audience. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates. Marylaine Block, St. Ambrose Coll. Lib., Davenport, Ia.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love and Hate relationship, September 7, 2002
This review is from: The Aristocrats (Hardcover)
I bought this book at a library sale. At first (chapter 1 and 2) I thought I would not finish it as it was not grabbing my attention. By the time I did finish it I was sorry it ended. A good book about English minor royalty and how they lived a couple of centuries ago. The family dynamics could be this century. Also, the fooling around, people now act like its new but its been here for centuries. All in all a good read.
