Book Description

January 19, 2000 1572920459 978-1572920453
Aristotle and Aristotelianism in Medieval Muslim, Jewish, and Christian Philosophy attempts, through its interpretation of Aristotle by Muslim as well as Jewish and Christian thinkers, to explain the reasons for the revival of Aristotelian thought in the West. Kassim discusses Aristotle's main philosophical concepts and analyzes these concepts by gradually exploring Aristotelian thought in its interactions with the Medieval Muslim, Jewish, and Christian speculative systems of thought. He shows from the writings of individual thinkers in these three different traditions how, and in what form, the continuity of Aristotelian thought is sustained in medieval philosophy. Among the scholars that Kassim studies in this work are such great thinkers as Avicenna, Plotinus, Proclus, Maimonides, and Thomas Aquinas. This book will be of great interest to classical, metaphysical and epistemological philosophers, as well as religious scholars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Depends on your scholarship. . ., January 23, 2001
While I am, for the casual reader, frightened of the rigid scholarly nature of this book, I am confident that it is one of the most intricately authentic books of historical Medieval philosophical thought being published today. Knowing the author personally, I am well aware of his veritable grasp of a variety of knowledges. Fluent in several languages and educated at the University of Bonn in Germany, Dr. Kassim is now an ever effulgent professor of wit and wisdom to a perpetually dwindling humanities and philosophy department at the University of Central Florida. With a teaching style that blends the menacing intensity of Anastasia's Rasputin (with a set of eyes to match) and the brilliance of a comically humbled intellectual giant, Husain is worthy of any budding, continuing, or advanced medievalist scholar. This being stated, I highly recommend not only purchasing the book, but also registering in, if at all possible, the Unversity of Central Florida's Medieval Philosophy course to greatly supplement the text.
