Book Description

Arithmetic and Number Sense is designed to be a comprehensive introduction to arithmetic that will be expanded upon throughout Zero Angel's Mathematics. Although considered "basic" by some many people struggle with this, or worse, believe they understand the material only to find at a later date that something is missing.

Zero believes that the struggles we have with mathematics are due to the way we are taught it. Memorizing will get a student through a class, but understanding will get them through life. Here, our goal is to develop the skills of arithmetic and foster a sense of how numbers interact and relate to each other so that we will be prepared for the material to come.

Appropriate for adult students, advanced young students and especially relevant to teachers of arithmetic and "basic math" no matter the sophistication of the student. If it is important for the student to understand the behind-the-scenes of arithmetic, it is imperative for the teacher to understand it.

About the Series:
Zero Angel's Mathematics is a series of "math help" sections designed to take the reader from no knowledge of mathematics through calculus. Although best used in conjunction with each other, they are split up so the reader that knows where their gaps and misunderstandings lay may only acquire the information they are looking for and not be forced to purchase unnecessary information.

Zero Angel's Mathematics is one teacher's attempt to teach the mathematics that should be being taught to students of math today. Math classes everywhere are teaching students to do long multiplication without teaching why we add; teaching cross multiplication without asking why. "Why" is one of the most important questions in mathematics and by teaching mechanical processes without considering their place in mathematics as a field we set students up to be no better than machines.

Unfortunately, this means when confronted with advanced problems, students have no chance of success. Zero always says, "Memorizing will get you through a class, but understanding will get you through life." This is his attempt at fostering understanding.

Upcoming Sections:
"Algebra and the Algorithm: Discovering Truth on a Journey of Generalization"
"Problem Solving and Dimensional Analysis: Life is a Word Problem, What's the Solution?"
"Inequalities, Logic and Proof: Making Sense of the Senseless"

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage of Mathematics Foundations October 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a wonderfully well written and well produced ebook in the foundations of mathematics. I would recommend it to adults and articulate high school students who are interested in understanding the foundational principles and beauty of mathematics and desire a deeper understanding than the procedural methods that they may have not been taught (or may have been taught but have not been retained) in their schooling. The book makes connections that facilitate an easy transition from elementary mathematics (for example, arithmetic) to more advanced principles (vector addition, theorems and proofs, et cetera).

2.0 out of 5 stars Theory is good but there needs to be more March 10, 2014
By woof
Format:Kindle Edition
This book presents math principles very clearly. However, as constructive criticism, I suggest adding some example problems to solve with answers and explanations. Also a quiz now and then would help t h e learner to check for understanding.
A common complaint is that while reading a theory text the reader must purchase a second book with practical problems to solve.

More About the Author

I go by Zero Angel because of the sheer number of Robby Richardson's out there (13 other authors on Amazon alone). "Zero" has been a nickname of mine for quite a while, and I answer to it as readily as my given name. The name is a reminder to me of everything I'm striving for and everything I'm not.

I've always lived in a fantasy world of one sort or another, starting with D&D and progressing through video games and books, and I've used that experience to create my own fantasy multiverse, "Zero Angel's War of the Ages". WotA, as a I call it, is my playground and is somewhere I can tell infinitely many stories of a variety of genres. The main series is epic fantasy with a focus on action, both physical and emotional.

I don't consider my style of fiction writing anything like Tolkien's, and in fact, it's more an anti-Tolkien. I hate reading through 20 pages of background and history to get to the content of the story, even though that may be interesting in and of itself. I write side stories to the main series for people that may be interested in the world itself, and I also write essays and articles for the world on my website and the WotA Wiki. I think people comparing my writing to LotR are thinking of the movies instead of the books.

When in the real world, I spend my time teaching math and going on adventures with my future wife, Samantha. From my time teaching, I've become convinced that teachers are ill-prepared and that we are approaching mathematics education rather backwards. I was driven to develop "Zero Angel's Mathematics" with the goal of working through all mathematics from the very beginning to the most complex for both teachers and students.
