Book Description

April 2002
Arizona Hiking describes hikes in five categories: urban backyard hikes; family hikes that range from easy to moderate; tougher day hikes that range from moderate to advanced; Grand Canyon hikes ranging from easy to advanced; and overnight hikes. Each description gives specific driving directions, elevations, recommended maps, safety suggestions, and official contacts for details on fees, regulations, etc. Hiking chapters start with two to four feature hikes, followed by at-a-glance descriptions of several additional hikes. Other chapters give general hiking preparation and safety guidelines and list additional resources. Includes seven chapters, total, with index and color map of Arizona.

Editorial Reviews

Review

evocative descriptions laced with hard-nosed advice...as pretty as it is useful...Well-indexed...loads of Web sites, phone numbers, maps -- John Stanley, The Arizona Republic, October 25, 2002

From the Publisher

Completely expanded and revised from our previous hiking book, Arizona Hiking includes:
* 122 full-color photographs and 70-plus hikes;
* hikes for every level -- casual walkers, family groups, hardier hikers, and overnight backpackers;
* details of urban trails easily accessible for hikers with little travel time (Phoenix, Tucson, Prescott, and Flagstaff-Sedona);
* major attractions: state parks, national monuments, Grand Canyon, and pristine wilderness areas;
* Arizona Trail connections.

Combining exciting long-distance treks with a variety of shorter outdoor jaunts makes this guidebook ideal for vacationing families and enthusiastic beginners as well as for those craving an exciting backpacking experience.

3.0 out of 5 stars AZ Highways directions that might get you near where you want to go, July 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Arizona Hiking: Urban Trails, Easy Paths & Overnight Treks (Paperback)
I'll start by saying that anyone that has tried to follow Arizona Highways directions know that they have to use their imagination at some point so why should the AZ Highways book be any different? Granted you don't want everyone trampling over these beautiful areas on a regular basis, but it would be nice to be able to find a few spots. It seems that they publish easy directions to heavily accessed areas and vague directions to the really good ones. ...Or they're taking pictures somewhere else nearby. I do like how they start off with camping/hiking ethics and then continue with breaking down the hikes into levels of difficulty (ie: urban, family, overnight...). The pictures are beautiful as AZ Highways pictures always are and some of the hikes are definitely worth the time.

Instead of maps and detailed directions, this book contains useless glossy photographs and narrative.
