Book Description

October 1, 2006
This beautiful book continues the Ozark Society Foundation’s nature series created almost forty years ago and is the first time that all of Arkansas’s rich population of butterflies and moths has been written about. Most of the butterflies and moths in this guide are found throughout the eastern United States and parts of the western states. Lori Spencer facilitates species identification by presenting detailed text entries alongside lavish, full-sized photographs.

The book includes 263 species descriptions and more than 300 color photographs, among them shots of larvae. General information about butterfly gardening and prime butterfly locations is also included. Spencer discusses each species’ life cycle, survival, anatomy, and behavior, as well as presenting collection of specimens. Maps break down the regions—and hot spots—where they are found. The guide features an extensive glossary and three indexes listing common names, scientific names, and caterpillar host plants.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, July 25, 2007
This review is from: Arkansas Butterflies and Moths (Paperback)
The pictures that are provided are not very helpful in identifying a lot of the species, as only one picture is shown for many species - not underside and upperside nor male and female. Several species do not have any pictures at all. (FYI -While there are many photographs taken in their natural habitats, several of the photographs are of dead specimens.) The layout of the book leaves several pages with large empty spaces. If you want a field guide, look elsewhere. If you are simply interested in looking at nice butterfly, moth, and caterpillar pics, then you will not be totally disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Don't Have to Be an Arkansan to Find This Book Useful!, June 16, 2007
By
This review is from: Arkansas Butterflies and Moths (Paperback)
This book is illustrated with full-color photos throughout-- and most appear to be taken in the wild. No cheesy watercolor drawings here. Even if you don't live in Arkansas, like I now do, _Arkansas Butterflies and Moths_ might just be more useful to you as a field guide than those various field guides that cover the whole of North America!

I particularly enjoyed Lori's description of the fun she had photographing the hickory horned devil.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nicely done and shows many things I couldn't find in other guides, January 10, 2012
This review is from: Arkansas Butterflies and Moths (Paperback)
This is a very useful guide for my area which is near Memphis, TN. The unfavorable review points out that there are not always pictures of upper and lower wings for each species, but in my opinion that doesn't give enough credit to the overall value of this guide. Yes, some of the pictures are of preserved insects on pins, but keep in mind some of these insects are not often found in the wild and seeing pictures of a preserved specimen will help people ID them alive in the field. The majority of pictures are of live butterflies and moths and cover many things I could not find in other field guides for North American lepidoptera. The author's descriptions are clear and to the point, and I enjoyed very much the times she added a little personal story like how she first became interested in butterflies.
