Arkham Asylum is possibly the most Freudian interpretation of Batman ever published. It is a deeply sick, highly introspective look into the world of Batman's "crazy" villains and the asylum in which they are confined. But on April Fool's Day, the Joker manages to let the inmates loose, take the staff hostage, and demand that Batman enter the asylum in exchange. Slick packaging and lavish painted artwork make this book an instant treat for the eyes. Grant Morrison's script was alternately praised and maligned; though ultimately it stands up as a unique take on this popular character.
