Also, there are rules for adjusting game difficulty, which is nice.

As a Arkham Horror I was very intrested in getting this expansion and was not disappointed.

With investigators unwilling to spend monster trophies, this makes the game harder.

Black Goat of the Woods is a Shun-Nuggurath themed small box expansion for Arkham Horror. It comes with a new Herald as well as a Relationship mechanic, Corruption Cards and a new group called The Cult of the Thousand. The Black Goat of the Woods is in my opinion, the best small box expansion for Arkham Horror.

Pros

- The Herald "Black Goat of the Woods" is one of the deadliest and most exciting Heralds, mostly for it's ability to make monster rushes and gate openings harder. Gate openings now release an extra monster into the board (which can be annoying) and half the monsters released whenever a gate opens or a monster surge occurs must be hexagon so you must have harder monsters. Furthermore, monsters surges make the Ancient One awaken faster. These effects prevents what I call investigator momentum where investigators begin gaining power faster than the game can respond and then the game is almost guaranteed. Every gate opening is exciting and changes the momentum of the game.

-Played with Shub-Niggurath as the Ancient One makes is a definite must. She makes monsters tougher and increases the deadliness of the Herald. With investigators unwilling to spend monster trophies, this makes the game harder.

-Relationship cards are a good counter mechanic to the Herald. Often they boost your fighting ability or make it easier to get items.

-Some of the new spells are interesting especially when combined with the ones from other expansions. And as always, new encounter cards make camping at locations less feasible. Even if you don't play with the Herald, you should shuffle the investigator and Ancient One cards into your regular deck. When combined with cards from other expansions, this drastically changes the game.

If your games of Arkham Horror have become predictable and easy, this expansion will cure what ails you. The addition of the Black Goat herald makes the game easily twice as hard. You can use the new goodies without the herald, though, if you don't want to be on the edge of your seat all game. Also, there are rules for adjusting game difficulty, which is nice.

It'll take about one game to get the new rules down. Certainly it's worth the money and time to get new cards and items that make the game more interesting and versatile.

See, my husband and I love Arkham Horror. We already have the Dark Phaeroh, and were looking for something else to liven up our games. We aren't exactly flush enough to pick up one of the boards yet, so this seemed like a good idea. We got it on time and everything, but it wasn't quite what we expected. Like, we thought that the Ancient One cards were the Ancient Ones, like Hastur and Shub and everyone. Even though it wasn't what we expected, we're going to be playtesting this afternoon and it looks like it will be a good expansion.

Also, for anyone who's interested in it, Strange Eons (google that) has a custom content generator available for download. We've been making our own investigators and Old Ones with it. This tool, in addition to the expansions, will make any Arkham Horror game truly your own.

My wife and I play arkham an eldritch horror a lot. We have every explanation but Kingsport and the mummy. And this small box expansion "the black goat of the woods" in my opinion is the hardest of all expansions including the big box ones. I only recommend you play with the herald sheet if you are a very very experienced arkham player.
This expansion adds MORE dark young(one of the most difficult monsters in the game) to the board. Also the amount of monsters will that this expansion spews out at during play is almost comical. All I could do is watch and laugh as our poor investigators go insane and become "currupted" from killing so many hexagon monsters. I mean, this bad boy expansion curb stomps you at every mythos. It adds " gate burts" which spawn gates on spaces even if they have an ELDER sign.
I've only beaten this herald sheet once on a fluke with my wife. We had extremly lucky rolls, mythos, and pulled some top notch investigators. I've tried beating it multiple times since with no luck.
The black goat is a race against monsters and the terror track. It raises remarkably fast if you don't start closing gates. Your sneak skills and will checks better be on their best rolls; you'd best find every elder sign in the deck; holy water will be your best friend; investigators with 3 or 4max sanity will struggle and cry for mommy.
I've your an experienced arkham player looking to add large amounts of difficulty to the game; yes get this unholy expansion. If your new and you just want to add some flavor to arkham stay away. I recommend the lurker in the threshold expansion (small box) or the king in yellow(small box). Dunwich horror expansion is also really good and adds really good ingredients to the game.
With all that said arkham is suppose to be hard and I'm glad I bought it for my collection for arkham. I'm giving it 3 stars because it's just TOO difficult and only master arkhamists should really play it.

The base game rocks, and we've been picking up all the expansions since. This particular expansion, Black Goat of the Woods, adds some particularly fun and challenging aspects to the game, and we have enjoyed adding it into our decks. If you are a fan of the game, this is definitely one expansion to include!
