THE BRIGHTRINGS WANT THEIR STUFF BACK!, May 2, 2006
This review is from: Arm of Kannon, Vol. 7 (Paperback)
There is more than one Arm of Kannon in the world, three in total. Volume 7 focuses on the Arm known as "Angel Fist". Its guardians are two strange brothers with superpowers, Rou and Shadow Brightring. They are not only supposed to protect the Arm from being corrupted by man, but they use the actual Holy Grail, that's right, the chalice that caught Jesus' blood on the cross to stifle the Arm's power. As long as they are kept together, the Arm cannot harm anyone. But Masayoshi Garama, in a stupid move to gain immortality, has stolen both of them, and can barely hold its power back in a specially prepared room. Beside him is "The Magician" Kanagi whose power to bend time and space, Garama hopes to use to tame the Arm. But the Brightring brothers have arrived to take back their items.
The cool thing about Arm of Kannon is that it has a constantly evolving or revolving plot that brings in new characters that are just as interesting as the old. It does leave me wondering when we'll get back to the original storyline we left in Volume 5, but the Brightring saga is just as entertaining or even better than that one. The art is stunning but the monsters leave a little to be desired. At times they look like visions of Hell, but most of the time they look like overweight rejects from the L.A. Weight loss clinic. If these demons wore any pants they would really have a problem with their guts hanging out. It's a good thing that they go the Porky Pig route! You can at least tell that Yamaguchi is TRYING to come up with some original visual designs even if he falls short sometimes. Even though there are a lot of battles in this volume, it's ok because they are all for a reason, to save the earth, or in Rou's case not only to save his life, but his brother and one of his friends. This is a good series to get into if you like horror and action along with a touch of superheroes.
I would also recommend 2 other manga: Reiko the Zombie Shop and Mermaid Saga.
