This review is from: Armada Super-Cons Transformer: Optimus Prime (Toy)
Hasbro has been listening. When the first Armada Prime came out, many fans had a few problems with it. The following are some of those problems, and how Hasbro has fixed them.1) Poseability. Fans were disappointed at the first Prime's lack of articulation. Hasbro says, "they want articulation? Let's give it to 'em." This new Prime has eleven points of it, including a head that can look up, down, and side to side. The ANKLES even pivot so that when Prime is posed with his legs apart, his feet can be flat on the ground. Good work, Hasbro. 2) The trailer. Infrared technology is cool and all, but the trailer seemed to still have a few bugs. After an initial try, many fans found the trailer to be more trouble than it was worth, what with the noise, partial transformations, and battery problems. Besides, half the fun of Transformers is transforming them by hand! Hasbro says "who needs a trailer at all?" The new prime marks the first semi-truck Prime figure ever (that I know of) to not come with a trailer, and that's fine with me. His mini-con has a place to ride back there, and there's a hitch that suggests (along with Hasbro media) that future accessories will be able to be "hitched" to Prime. 3) Cost. The first prime was just plain expensive. This one, which is an improvement in nearly every way, comes in at just under $.. at most retailers. 4) Accuracy. This Prime, partially because of the articulation, is far more accurate to the comics and TV show, which translates into a really cool-looking figure. The awkward "shoulder pads" look and clunky legs of the first Armada Prime have been addressed. Seems pretty durable. Two problems I have so far: I can't figure out how his mini-con unlocks the "double-punch" feature, he plugs in and the lever still doesn't want to move. Maybe I'll get the hang of it. Also, the mini-con looks great on its own, but as Prime's "gun" kinda looks rediculous. Other than that, the best Prime toy yet. Great job, Hasbro!

I grew up when Transformers were just hitting the scenes and have found the recent Generation 1 re-issues to be a great way to pick up the Transformers that I could never get as a kid. The re-issues also sparked new interest in collecting Optimus Prime in his many forms over the last near 20 years. I picked up this Optimus Prime in the store and was very impressed with it. It looks much like the $.. version without the trailer and a little smaller - still a great piece to display. He is very poseable, something the old Transformers lacked severely, and looks great holding the Mini-con transformed as his blaster rifle. All in all, a great buy, especially for a child that doesn't have $.. to spend on a transformer.

For you parents whose kids want a toy of Optimus Prime from Armada, but can't or won't spend about [$$$] for the large toy, this may be for you. This is a smaller, less expensive version of Optimus prime that loses the electronic and combining features of the larger toy (not to mention the truck trailer) but makes up for it with nicer artictulation and good attention to detail. Fans of the Beast Wars and Robots in Disguise toy lines will probably prefer this Prime to his larger counterpart. His mini-con partner also changes into a gun he can hold, or mount on the back of the truck mode. The mini also controls a punching action through the lever on Optimus' back, but it looks more like a dance move to me. Pretty durable, although the pipes on the arms can pop off easily and risk being lost. (the large one had this problem too) All in all, a very good Transformer toy, especially for the budget-concious.
