5.0 out of 5 stars Timely update of Walvoord's 1990 book, July 4, 2007
By
moviemusicbuff (Walnut, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Armageddon, Oil, and Terror: What the Bible Says about the Future (Hardcover)
Mark Hitchcock worked together with John F. Walvoord to update Armageddon, Oil, and the Middle East Crisis (1990) and this is the product. The book is still written about biblical prophecy from the premillennial dispensationalist viewpoint, but it has been thoroughly revised to reflect the current situation of the 21st century, hence the new title.

The chapters are the following:

Ch. 1 Why Prophecy?
Ch. 2 Oil Becomes the Ultimate Weapon
Ch. 3 Terrorism Reaches Everyone
Ch. 4 Israel: Ground Zero for the End Times
Ch. 5 The Decline and Fall of America
Ch. 6 The New Pax Romana
Ch. 7 The Russian-Islamic Invasion of Israel
Ch. 8 The Coming World Dictator
Ch. 9 The Final Holocaust
Ch. 10 Iraq -- The New Babylon
Ch. 11 China Flexes Its Awesome Power
Ch. 12 Natural Disasters, Disease, and Famine Reach Everyone
Ch. 13 The Last Suicidal Battle of WWIII
Ch. 14 A Promise to Remember
Ch. 15 Scanning the Horizon

The chapters I found most interesting are:

Chapters 2 The authors go in depth about the vital importance of Middle East Oil on foreign policy of different nations and the connection of oil with the Gulf Wars

Chapter 3 The authors mention Al-Qaida, Hamas, & Hezbollah as well as the events of 9-11; all these events point to the coming fulfillment of the invasion of Israel by the Russian-Islamic Confederacy

Chapter 5 The decline and fall of America -- there are different options to take regarding biblical prophecy about America -- the key point is that America will decline and lose its prominent leadership role in the world, paving the way for the revival of the Roman Empire

Chapter 7 The Russian-Islamic invasion of Israel -- this is a big update from the 1990 version and previous works on prophecy. Here, Russian will ally with an Islamic confederacy to invade Israel

Chapter 10 Iraq -- the New Babylon -- the authors see Iraq rising in prominence in the future, as the future base for the Antichrist

Chapter 11 China -- China and India will rise in prominence, in fulfillment of the rise of the "kings of the east"

Chapter 15 Scanning the Horizon -- prophetic checklists are provided for the readers to see what the Bible foretells regarding the church, Israel, and the nations

If you subscribe to the premillennial dispensationalist viewpoint, you would love this work. It is completely updated and very informative. I especially appreciate the detailed revision which incorporates how terrorism, America, and China come into play with Bible prophecy.

It is much better than the 1990 version (America, Oil, & Middle East crisis). There are helpful charts throughout the book as well. Even if you don't hold to the premillennial dispensationalist viewpoint, you will find this book to be an informative resource. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Has the Answers, May 21, 2007
This review is from: Armageddon, Oil, and Terror: What the Bible Says about the Future (Hardcover)
Mark Hitchcock and John F. Walvoord have hit the nail on the head, have shot the center out of the bullseye. Oil is the key to the events shaping up in the Middle East. With the depletion of reserves and the duplicitous
nature of rogue states like Iran and Venezuela, the world is increasingly being held hostage to having the pipelines being shut off.

Europe, the United States, and others so dependent upon the vacillating temperament of OPEC have set themselves up for the catastrophe that most certainly awaits them. A Lack of research into alternative fuel sources, a societal refusal to cut back on consumption, an unwillingness to drill new sites and build new refineries, have exacerbated an already critical situation regarding oil. Add this to the standing the US and its allies have with the nation of Israel, we can readily see the hastening approach of Armageddon.

It is clear to most who are open-minded enough to compare Biblical prophecies with today's headlines that the only thing more idealistically
precious to the Islamic Arab countries is their immutable, deep-seated
hatred of
Jews in particular and Christians in general. If oil and terrorism are the means to subjugate and eventually destroy both, they will use it to the extreme.

The authors have clearly and concisely outlined the roles that each of the countries, including the US, Russia, and China, will play in the latter day times. There is no escaping the eventuality, just a matter of when in God's eternal plan. This book is a wake up call for everyone to be prepared. Hitchcock and Walvoord, however, do remind us who believe and trust in the Savior of mankind " That there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus our Lord ".

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Star, June 13, 2007

This review is from: Armageddon, Oil, and Terror: What the Bible Says about the Future (Hardcover)
This is the one volume book that I hoped was one day coming that would, with authority and not overwhelmingly religious, make and state the case for political/prophetic world events. Get this book if you are at all interested or curious about Biblical prophecy and world events. The book has only been out for a brief time and is current, including charts that are concise, current and make sense. I would only have added more comprehensive information on their interpretation of Babylon as it was too brief and short-sighted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will You Survive in a World Gone Mad for Oil?, February 16, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Will you be alive during the time that Dr. John F. Walvoord describes as The Decline and Fall of America?

In his 1974 publication, ARMAGEDDON, OIL AND THE MIDDLE EAST, Dr. Walvoord predicted that a worldwide shortage of oil will precipitate the initial scenario leading to biblical Armageddon. In 2007, Dr. Walvoord's son, John E. Walvoord, and co-author Mark Hitchcock revised, updated, and renamed the book ARMAGEDDON, OIL AND TERROR. Although senior Dr. Walvoord died in December of 2002, the revisers used additional material "...drawn from his other works and conversations during the last two years of his life."

The new book proposes that twelve, biblically predicted, major "events" will occur in a possibly-soon-to-come sequence leading to Armageddon. Reading about Event #1, the world's desperate struggle for oil, may open your eyes to the shocking possibility that life as we know it in the United States may dramatically change to that of a third-world country. The last of these twelve events will be followed immediately by the return of Christ to the earth.

As do most conservative, evangelical Bible scholars, Dr. Walvoord bases his teaching of prophecy upon a literal (grammatical-historical) interpretation of Bible Scriptures. This view leaves room for the interpretation of some words and phrases as being symbolic or figurative, but it insists the Bible means what it says unless allegorical meanings are obviously intended. (The "Beast," for example, symbolizes the Antichrist, but "one thousand years" means one thousand years.)

This very readable book is as timely and current as your daily newspaper. Whatever your view of prophecy, read this book now! It may change your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Biblical Analysis -- Deserves a Wide Readership, June 8, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Armageddon, Oil, and Terror: What the Bible Says about the Future (Hardcover)
Authors Dr. Mark Hitchcock, a biblical prophecy expert worthy of his growing national reputation, and John E. Walvoord, the son of the late Dr. John F. Walvoord, have done a fantastic job in updating Dr. Walvoord's compelling book of decades ago.

Now, the book, Armageddon, Oil, and Terror: What the Bible Says About the Future, reads like today's newspaper, although it is analyzing biblical texts that are thousands of years old. Whether one is a Christian or not, and/or a dispensationalist or not, the book makes fascinating reading--almost like a spy thriller--just because of the correlation between what God disclosed to His prophets so long ago and the realities of today's world. Hitchcock offers readers a crisp, reasoned writing style--a joy to read--which itself blends seamlessly into the scholarly writing of Dr. Walvoord, a 20th century giant in the field of biblical prophecy. Walvoord's insights into Bible prophecy came at a time when the geopolitical signs were much dimmer on the horizon. Before his death in December, 2002, and following 9/11, Dr. Walvoord himself had come to believe that the new rise of militant Islam and increased worldwide terrorism against Israel and her allies was perhaps the last major piece of the puzzle that had escaped previous students of prophecy.

I highly recommend to readers this excellent work of reasoned analysis and sound biblical scholarship. It deserves a wide readership by all citizens, government and military leaders, and prospective future political leaders (including 2008 U.S. presidential and congressional candidates). Of course, this updated version is must reading for all serious students of Bible prophecy.

I might also note that the book jacket and layout is very attractive--making the book a fine addition to any library. Kudos to the dust jacket designer and the book's editors!

This book is a must read for anyone in this day and age, believer in Christ or not! It will bring to light amazing associations between today's world events and the Bible prophecies. It will make you see the world from an fascinating perspective and it can make an eternal difference in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pay Attention, July 13, 2007
This review is from: Armageddon, Oil, and Terror: What the Bible Says about the Future (Hardcover)
This book is telling it just like it is going to be. Reading this book has (to me) brought to light a number of issues that are coming true and you can see it coming true. The one religion is being talked about it right now. Time is no winding down for the Lord to return.

This review is from: Armageddon, Oil, and Terror: What the Bible Says about the Future (Hardcover)
We Christians have really been beaten over the head with this stuff recently. Even if you didn't read (listen to) any of the Left Behind series, End Times discussion has been all around us. Dispite the Christian pop-culture phenomena, this particular book is a must read for anyone interested in the (immediate?) future. The predictions in the Bible are literally coming to pass. All the dominos are lined up in a row, and some of them will surprise you, even if you have read Revelation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review: Armageddon, Oil and Terror, November 25, 2008
"Armageddon, Oil and Terror" is a book dealing with Biblical prophecy and past and current events. The book is not easy reading, but it is however, an eye-opener.

I pride myself in being fairly intelligent and knowledgeable, but some of the statistics quoted in the book blew me away and basically just reinforced what I feel already, that it is imperative the United States and individuals clean house.

The book delves into what the authors call "events" and there are 12 in all in the book. From the decline and fall of American influence and power to a sobering look at the Islamic nations, "Armageddon, Oil and Terror" will shake you up.

One thing made clear in the book is the fundamental need to continue our alliance with Israel. In a world plagued with anti-Semitism, it is imperative that Christians remember that Jerusalem is the city of God.

A tough read, but a good reference to have in your home. I give this book 4 stars.

This book is an update to what the late Dr. John Walvoord originally wrote. The timing for this book could not have been more perfect. This book is very easy to read without getting too academic. It gives a lot of information and is easy to understand even for the average reader. Buy this book!
