Like another reviewer, I was initially very disappointed in this product because the hood part does not stay up as the picture shows. I bought it specifically for one of my cats who likes cave-type enclosures but is not a burrower. Without some kind of structure the hood simply flops down. I decided modifying it would be easier than sending it back to Armarkat. At first I thought I'd use a metal coat hanger to stiffen up the hood, but then remembered I'd bought some stiff plastic tubing for another project. This tubing is labeled SDR9 PEX 3006 (O.D. is approx 3/8"). and was purchased at Home Depot in the plumbing/pipe area. I ripped the seams about 1/2" where the beige velour "channel" of the hood meets the bed on both sides (see uploaded photo), then fed a 32" piece of the tube through the hood's channel. Now it stays up perfectly and two of my cats will fight over who gets to sleep in it! I didn't bother to sew up the openings, so the tube can be pulled out when the bed needs washing. BTW, this bed is roomy enough for a 10-11 lb. cat, but I'm quite sure my 18 lb. small dog wouldn't fit.

UPDATE 4/10/11: The cats have spoken and they much prefer Armarkat Cat Bed 18-Inch Long C08HJH/MH, Beige, the BURGUNDY/BEIGE model, which needed the same hood modification as this slipper-shaped bed. The opening is wider and the bed area is roomier. They don't want to use the slipper-shaped bed anymore. I'm using it for their toy mousies (see uploaded photo).

I agree with the another reviewer in that it's like a sack. Think of a fur-lined bag with a rigid "lip," but the rest is kind of floppy.

We had a tough time getting any of our three cats to use the bed at first. We tried catnip, which usually works when trying to get our cats to try something new, but that didn't work. Then we tried putting an article of clothing, in this case a t-shirt my wife had worn, in the bed. That got one cat to sleep in it one time, but in the few weeks we've had the bed, that was the only time we saw a cat use it.

This is not to say that the bed is at all defective - it looks like a well-built product. But realize it is sort of floppy and the only reason it looks full in the picture is because there is a cat in it.

The frontal photo shows a fleecy little cave that our small dog would have loved to curl up in. The item is actually more like a tiny sleeping bag with a slight arch in the front. If you're buying for a ferret or a cat or dog that likes to burrow under things, this might work. I would guess that most other pets would just sleep on top of it. It had a very plush interior and durable-looking non-skid base, and appeared to be good quality construction. I uploaded a side-view photo.

If you decide to try it, buy from a seller that has a written return policy (Amarkat doesn't). For me that means that after 2 weeks and many emails, I still don't have a refund.
