Interesting but not comprehensive book, May 10, 2005
This review is from: Armor of the Afghanistan War (Paperback)
This is book that concists of photographs from Soviet Union armoured equipment in Afghanistan war. The subject is very interesting: first combat use of many soviet weapons by themselves in the Afghanistan war. In those days of cold war, combat success and limitations of soviet armor were under great surveillance by Nato.
The book contains mostly photographs, there are background text only 1 page in beginning of the book. Many photos are of course very interesting because there are very few publications that shows armor equipment of Aghanistan war.
What i don't like in this book is that book shows many many photos that are irrelevant to subject, such as in beginning pages images from some Afghan tank museum of obsolete pre-2WW tanks which weren't used combat in Afghanistan or are relevant for this book. Book also shows photos of helicopters and artillery.
Another shortcoming is that big part of the book includes pictures from soviet pull-out in 1988, that means that there are many "Btr in column"-pictures which gives nothing much of informational or modelling value. There are actually none real combat pictures and very few after the combat- pictures.
No detailed pics of Aghanistan special armour solutions, such as no close-ups from Bmp additional side armour plates, or t-62 add-on armour. No pictures of afghanistan-modified Shilka Zsu-23-4 etc. Actually very much better book of close-up pics of modified-bmp afghanistan pics is Zaloga's Bmp, Concord 1990 book.
But even if there is some limitations, this book is very interesting. And i suggest every one interested in Soviet Armour to buy it ( altough it is hard to find).
