This review is from: Armstrong Meets Peterson (Audio CD)
.
We just lost the wonderful Oscar Peterson on 24 Dec. 07. O.P. had brilliant keyboard technical ability, swung like mad, and from the 1950s--(sponsored by Norman Granz)--jammed with just about every major jazzman on the block: Lester Young, Ben Webster, Billie Holiday, Benny Carter, Stan Getz, Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Stephane Grapelli--you name 'em. And he made them all sound even better! This summit meeting with the beloved Louis Armstrong dates from 1957: "Oscar Peterson and his stellar trio [plus Herb Ellis on guitar] were obviously pleased to be playing with jazz legend Louis Armstrong--Oscar never allows his awsome technical prowess to intrude upon Louis' relaxed vocals and trumpet jaunts. The song choices are all classics, Armstrong sings and plays with humor and feeling while Peterson demonstrates that he is a subtle accompanist, crafting Armstrong's melodic lines into webs of spirited musical dialogue. This is classic jazz at its best." Verve Originals manufactured in the European Union (2005) with original cover-art, and liner notes by jazz critic Leonard Feather. The saints done marched on in! ...
