5.0 out of 5 stars Hail to the King, baby!
Army of Darkness is without a doubt, one of the greatest films of all time. And the music only enhances the experience. Unlike the scores to Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2, where the music was mood music in the truest sense of the word, the score to "Army" serves just as well on its own as it does with the movie. Some favorite tracks are the Prologue, the March...

3.0 out of 5 stars Short but Sweet
When you are making a whacked-out historical adventure/comedy/horror flick on a shoestring budget and with limited special effects (ahhh, the days before CGI!), you need to do whatever you can to keep the film from losing all credibility and turning into an endlessly cheesy camp-fest. Sam Raimi had Joseph LoDuca make a soundtrack that could help drive the goofiness along...

Some favorite tracks are the Prologue, the March of the Dead, and The Deathcoaster. You can just hear Ash saying, "Welcome to the twenty-first century." I have to disagree with the reviewer who wants one-liners from the movie on the soundtrack. They did that with the soundtrack to Apollo 13 and that got a lot of unfavorable reviews. Perhaps a track of just one-liners from the movie would be good, but having one-liners on the rest of the tracks would detract from the music. But anyway, if you like Army of Darkness, buy this cd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Muy Bueno es Army of Darkness, June 27, 2000

Army of Darkness is such a funny movie...this score (soundtrack)gives it that extra...something. Joseph LoDuca and Danny Elfman have such contrasting styles, you can tell instantly which tune is "March of the Dead" I love this soundtrack, and this is a must for anyone who is a lover of fine soundtracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack, June 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Army of Darkness (Audio CD)
On some of the tracks I was reminded of the old Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks swashbuckler movies, because that's the kind of fantasy muxic that is on this soundtrack. Joseph LoDuca has created a wonderful blend of horror and fantasy music that sounds like something out of an episode of hercules or xena(music wise I mean). All in all it is a wondeful cd to listen to and I recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy music.

When you are making a whacked-out historical adventure/comedy/horror flick on a shoestring budget and with limited special effects (ahhh, the days before CGI!), you need to do whatever you can to keep the film from losing all credibility and turning into an endlessly cheesy camp-fest. Sam Raimi had Joseph LoDuca make a soundtrack that could help drive the goofiness along as well as bring some bona-fide drama into the film.

The tracks like "Building the Deathcoaster" and "Bone'anza" are impossible to listen to without feeling the urge to go do something heroic. In fact if you saw the 2001 Oscars you might remember that during the montage tribute to Dino de Laurentiis they played a bit of "Building the Deathcoaster," although they did not show any clips from the film... which tells you that in Hollywood they view the soundtrack as being better than the visuals from the film!

What really hurts this CD as "listening music" is the short length of the tracks, which is a reflection of the limited budget of the film. It is amazing, however, just how much emotional buildup LoDuca could squeeze into a minute's worth of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great action score, June 20, 2000

"Army of Darkness" is my favorite movie, and when I heard how well Joe LoDuca's score added to the atmosphere, I knew I had to buy the CD. The music is everything an action film score should be. It encompasses the whole spirit of the movie and plunges you right back into the events in the film, whether it be when Ash fights off two Deadites at once on the parapet, or when Ash kisses Sheila for the first time. The musical scores from the first two "Evil Dead" films were borderline bad, while still holding together some of the films' atmosphere, but Joseph LoDuca's carefully put together score for "Army of Darkness" goes above and beyond anything I would have expected from him, watching the first two films. Danny Elfman is also noteworthy for one of the CD's best tracks. But the best has to be track 17--one of the most exciting music tracks I've ever heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars LoDuca's Music Expresses Raimi's Appeal, February 18, 1999
By A Customer
Dark comedy, or "horror" comedy, is the way of the future. Director, Sam Raimi, composer, Joseph LoDuca, and actor, "Master Bruce," not only create this genre but expand it beyond limitations. Listen to the soundtrack and watch the film and see what I mean.

4.0 out of 5 stars Army of Darkness "Original directors cut music", October 23, 1998
By
First of all, when i ordered the Army of Darkness Special Import which amazon.com offers now i thought wow, its a 98 relase must have more music on it,and perhaps the music to the little known AOD original pre US release ending, which can be found on japanese laserdisc, and other directors cut music. However i was sent this 93 release by accident, however it has all the music from the japanese laserdisc, and more, it has additional music longer scores etc in almost every track, you can tell how much movie was cut in the US just by listening, heres an amazing page where you can find realvideo scenes of the cut scenes as special orginal ending...THIS SOUNDTRACK IS AMAZING, a GREAT SCORE. some scores are slow however most build up nicely and have a thrilling feeling to them..makes you want to blast the music get in your old car and speed down suburban areas..um, not like I,,um,, did that or anything:)

Army of Darkness is my favorite film of the "Evil Dead" trilogy
and the music is one of the best things. Joe LoDuca's score is
beautiful and I also enjoyed Danny Elfman's "March of the Dead"
theme too. I highly recommend this great soundtrack.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shades of things to come!, October 1, 2006
This spirited soundtrack is an example of Joseph LoDuca's early work, before the Hercules and Xena TV series. It's not as exotic or eclectic as his efforts for those shows, but there are many similarities (especially to "Hercules") and lots of great percussion. "Army of Darkness", a sequel in the "Evil Dead" series of movies, is a fantasy/horror movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. (Bruce Campbell as a time-traveling hero fighting an undead army with a working chainsaw (instead of a hand, mind you) attached to his wrist? Uh-huh.) So, in addition to all the heroic brass and orchestral sweep of a standard adventure movie soundtrack, there's a good deal of humor in this music, too. The movie is allegedly set "seven hundred years in the past" (which, counting back from the early 1990s, would put it around the 14th century). And I'm happy to report that one of the tracks, "Night Court," actually sounds like the distinctive Ars Nova music that gained popularity in Europe during that time. Nice going! There's also lots of good battle music, and a few affecting slow themes. Track #13, March of the Dead, was composed by Danny Elfman (who's since gone on to other soundtrack projects of his own, like "Planet of the Apes"). Follow Joseph LoDuca's evolution as a composer by checking out his later work for "Hercules," "Xena" and the movie "Brotherhood of the Wolf."
