Editorial Reviews

Review

“Compelling…Weale elucidates the warped values which enabled this sinister organization to commit some of the worst crimes in recorded history. This is an extremely important book which I recommend most highly.”—Michael Burleigh, author of Moral Combat

“Exceptional.”—Andrew Roberts, Mail On Sunday (UK)

“In this landmark history, Adrian Weale tells the twenty-year story of the SS with much brio and authority, and presents a story rich in drama and horror. This is a major achievement by a historian at the top of his game…A meticulous account of the emergence of the SS from its origins as Hitler’s protection squad to the huge, ungainly beast that it became.”—Guy Walters, Literary Review (UK)

Good history, a little tedious by the end, struggled a little to finish it. For an organization that stirred such fear and was so pervasive, it's demise was pretty anti-climactic. So's the book.

Really- an army of EVIL? The contents of this book are simply a detailed rehashing of better books from before- go to the military history section of any library or bookstore to find tomes more interesting and better illustrated. As with many popular "history" books these days we're dealing with a "historian" who has simply daisy-chained ideas from a bunch of second source popular "history" books. That silly title says it all about where you're going with this book- those WW2 Germans were COMPLETELY different from us Brits and you Yanks- especially those of us living today! HAH! The Waffen SS (as the elite of the Wehrmacht) probably has the best combat record of any army in modern history- unwittingly or not we give them due defererence with our camo jammies and helmets. They fought and died against real opponents- not with overwhelming superiority as we do today. The fact is that every army today longs to be like the Waffen SS- and many are minus the physical and moral courage. War criminality is the way of doing business now- killing civilians is the norm. The SS had cool uniforms and were not afraid to fight and die and kill for what they believed in- they did it eyes wide open. There could just as easily be a book called: "Army of Evil- a History of the RAF in WW2" or "Army of Evil- a History if the IDF after 1967" or "Army of Evil- a History the Chilean Army in the 1970s" etc. etc. There is a trend now in popular history to make sure we today know how different we (in the West) are from those WW2 Germans when in fact morally we are even more bankrupt than they- we deny our true nature. Remember that Hitler used as his model in the East what the United States did to what he called "the redskins". Will there ever be a book called "Army of Evil- the US Cavalry in the 19th Century"? Probably not- our extermination was complete... If you are interested in the SS and the Waffen SS there are better sources both to titillate and to inform.

Army of Evil is a new book by Adrian Weale. Weale, a Sandhurst Graduate and seven year military intelligence veteran of the British Army. Weale has established himself as a bestselling author since he left the military in 1992. Weale's book serves w as an introduction to the SS (Schutzstaffeln). Army of Evil contains many period photographs; includes maps and has a commendable bibliography.
The SS began as Hitler's bodyguard. It was made up a mixture of thugs and also intellectuals. SS Head Himmler and the SS ruled the German Reich. The evil Himmler (1900-suicide in 1945) wielded immense power within Germany. The SS was in charge of the concentration and extermination camps. It was corrupt as the Nazis seized Jewish property and the lives of over 6 million
million Jews. Millions of Soviets, Gypsies, enemy peoples and other died in the gas chambers and by a bullet in the back of the head before a ditch. Himmler and the SS he led were instrumental in wiping out their rivals the SA led by Ernst Rohm on the night of the long knives June 30, 1934. Himmler was a faithful paladin to the murderous Hitler.
Himmler was an odd little man who believed in weird Germanic cults and wanted the SS to be viewed as a Nordic band of honorable knights who had no qualms about murdering racial inferiors. The SS also had an army called the Waffen SS (waffen meaning weapons. It wore black uniforms and specialized in terror against the German people and the nations invaded by the Nazi Wehrmacht.
Weale spends several chapters on a detailed examination of how the SS was organized from the top down to the platoon level. He examines how the SS trained their personnel and the mindset that turned this feared Death Head organization into leaders of a mass industrial killing machine.

The rise of the SS in Germany during the run-up to WWI, and the subsequent SS atrocities in re: "The Final Solution" makes for fascinating reading for WWII buffs.
