Book Description

October 2002
In the first of a two-volume study, the author presents an extremely detailed record of the organisation, doctrine and equipment of U.S. Army infantry divisions during the latter part of World War II. The second volume will provide capsule histories for all U.S. Army infantry divisions during this period. After examining the state of the U.S. Army during the 1940-43 period, Yves Bellanger focuses on the 1943-45 period, and presents each of the division's sub-units - from the divisional HQ to an infantry battalion, from the divisional artillery to its combat engineer element. For each, the author examines their organisation (down to the lowest level possible), their training and tactical doctrine, and the equipment, vehicles and weapons they used. The first volume concludes with a comprehensive set of appendices, including sample command rosters.

About the Author

Yves J. Bellanger was born in 1953. He has a master's degree in philosophy, but discovered history well before this. War, as a subject, occupied a large part of his life in philosophy as much as in history. His interest in the USA, and its military history, has led him to concentrate on studying the US Army from 1940 to the present. The lack of books regarding its organisation spurred him on to write his own; meeting veterans, he has dedicated his researches to their memory. He looks for the role of man in war, through its organisation and doctrine. Yves is married to Cathy, and has four children; the family live in Angers.

More About the Author

Born in 1953, Yves J. Bellanger has a Master's degree in Philosophy, but he discovered history well before this. War, as a subject, occupied a large part of his researches in philosophy as much as in history. The lack of books regarding the organization of the U.S. Army during World War Two spurred him to write a first book about the organization of the Infantry Division. He continues on this subject with a series of books on the Armored Division. Meeting veterans, and being member of American veteran associations, he dedicated his researches to their memories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Us Army Infantry Divisions 1943 1945: Volume 1 Organisation,, January 25, 2003
This review is from: US Army Infantry Divisions 1943-1945: Volume 1: Organization, Doctrine, Equipment (Hardcover)
Simply a fantastic work for the serious student of the organization of the US Army in WWII! Succinctly puts forth the information on the TO&E's of the various formations from Infantry Company up to the Divisional level, covering all aspects of the different units, from medical detachments, cannon companies, signals sections to divisional artillery. Good work also on the basics of the infantry doctrine of the US Army in WWII. Thank you, Mr. Bellanger, for doing the footwork for the rest of us!

5.0 out of 5 stars TO&E Infantry, August 13, 2010
This review is from: US Army Infantry Divisions 1943-1945: Volume 1: Organization, Doctrine, Equipment (Hardcover)
A superbly excellent book on Infantry TO&E during the last years of WW II after the US Army reorganized to better combat an enemy who's organization and operations had been studied in detail. This is a book of the modernized US Army Infantry that won the war the hard way... on the ground!
