Amazon.com Review

3DO's famous little green men are back, and this time they're invading the Game Boy Advance. Once again General Plastro, the leader of the Tan army, attempts world domination. This time he's enlisted the help of powerful aliens. Gamers choose either the stalwart Sarge or the vivacious Vikki to thwart Plastro.

The game plays like a classic overhead-view shooter. The controls are simple, although strafing with the shoulder button takes some getting used to. Gameplay consists entirely of shooting enemies, finding objects, and unlocking doors. It's a wonderfully simple formula that will appeal to gamers of all ages.

It's far from a perfect game, though. The graphics pale in comparison to other Game Boy Advance launch titles--the early levels look particularly dull. The developers opted for assigning passwords after each level rather than letting players save their progress on the cartridge. The collision detection can be irksome--you'll swear that you've hit an enemy, only to watch him continue assaulting you. Finally, most players will finish the game in a few days (some in just one).

Army Men Advance is a poor choice for the hard-core gamer, but casual and younger gamers are sure to enjoy its simplicity. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • Simple controls
  • Simple gameplay
  • Later levels are cool
Cons:
  • Poor graphics
  • No in-game saving
  • Early levels are boring

Product Description

Cartridge Only Some things will never change. Weird Al will never stop kickin' out funky polkas, Nintendo will never stop improving the performance of Game Boy systems, and little Green Army Men will always wage war against tiny Tan Army Men. The Army Men franchise shines on Game Boy Advance, with responsive play control and bright, vibrant graphics. For anyone who's ever savored the smell of plastic soldiers smoldering under a magnifying glass on a hot summer day, Army Men Advance delivers a solid blast of nostalgic fun.

1.0 out of 5 stars yawn..., July 14, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Army Men Advance (Video Game)
I have to tell ya, I'm a die hard Army Men fan. Army Men: Sarge's Hereos, Army Men: Sarge's Hereos II, and Army Men: Air Combat for N64, Army Men I and II for the PC. I love 'em all. Then along came Army Men Advance. "WOW!", I thought. "A new Army Men game!" I rented this game expecting a good, solid, handheld adventure, but I got a bad, weak, handheld dissapointment. I BEAT THE GAME THE DAY I RENTED IT!!! IT TOOK ME 2 MEASLEY HOURS WHEN YOU GET TO RENT THE GAME FOR 5 WHOLE DAYS!!! FOR THE NEXT 4 DAYS AND 22 HOURS, I HAD TO TRY NOT TO LOSE THE THING (and i'm very good at misplacing things...it's a gift, i guess...)!!! There is, however, a challenge to the game. Oh. Wait a minute. I was wrong. There is no challenge. There's about 14 levels in the game, yet it took me 2 hours to breeze through them all. I'd rather watch molasses move on a cold day. Whatever you do though, DO NOT be drawn in by the only good thing about this game. The graphics. The graphics were pretty good, but they don't hold a chance against games like THPS 2 (then again, no handheld game could so what would make this one so special?). I liked the cartoonish animation of the environment and the soldiers, but that was it. I expected more from this game, but instead, it just left me dry...

5.0 out of 5 stars Army Mens pretty cool!, January 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Army Men Advance (Video Game)
Now you either love or hate this game (most people hate it) but I love it! See the graphics are not 'advanced' but they are clean and appealing 5 stars. The gameplay is sometimes repetitive but it's still plenty of fun throwing grenades and stuff and the missions are simple but nice 4 stars. The sound is pretty good but some parts sound like a game boy could use them with no trouble! 3 stars. The controls are almost as if the game boy advance was designed for this one game! 5 stars. Lastability, now somebody wrote in a review "I beat this game in 20 minutes" (somebodys telling tales) which is basically impossible without cheats because even if it's really easy it'll take you to long to walk to the end after doing objectives with 12 missions. You will finish it fairly easily if your use to these games but if your not...;). 4 stars. Replay Value, is very good in this you just wanna come back for more! 5 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 and a half actually..., August 18, 2001

This game is pretty cool. It's not very hard and it's pretty repetitive, but it's also very fun. Younger kids will have a blast with it, but older gamers such as myself will soon look for other avenues of challenge. Buy Castlevania, Mario, Tony Hawk, and Rayman first, then think about this one.
