Yeah, the little green and tan soldiers from our youth are back, but good old Sarge, the lead character in most of the games, doesn't lead them. In Army Men: Air Attack 2 it's Blade the helicopter pilot large and in charge. His personality is reminiscent of Robert Duvall's deranged Colonel Kilgore from Apocalypse Now, and that adds quite a bit of humor to the destruction... and there is a lot of destruction. Things blow up really well on the PS2, and Air Attack 2 has you piloting all kinds of choppers on all sorts of missions. You've got an Apache, a Cobra, and an Osprey, and Blade's wingmen all have different attacks. Missions range from melting evil Tan army men and destroying their supplies to search and rescue work--all in pleasing and well-constructed living room and backyard environments. The graphics and audio are excellent and really take advantage of the PS2's advanced hardware. Plus, it's even more fun with a buddy in split-screen mode on the same TV.
And for the benefit of those of us who used to stage harrowing scenarios involving real green plastic army men and fireworks, the makers have included a small selection of fireworks into the gameplay. To quote General Plastro, "I love the smell of plastic in the morning!" --Andrew S. Bub

Great Helicopter Action!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Army Men: Air Attack 2 (Video Game)
This game is fun! Air Attack 2 is kind of like "Toy Story" where you pilot a toy helicopter in a "Toy Story" like world. There are missions where trees appear to be small in the Army men world, and then there are levels where the trees are big like in Toy Story. Army Men Air Attack 2 is about you and your helicopter. If you liked shows/movies like Airwolf, Blue Thunder, etc., or other helicopter games like "Soviet Strike" for the PSX, then you'll be in for a treat as it seems no one other helicopter game appears available on the PS2. One of the coolest things of the game appears to be the ability to pick up objects in the game with your helicopter's "winch" and fling them at enemy units. You can pick up objects (like a dog bowl, frisbee, baseball, etc.) and throw them at enemy units (thereby saving precious helicopter ammunition). The gameplay appears varied, too. Air Attack 2 doesn't appear to be just about blowing stuff up. Granted, in some missions, you have to destroy factories and enemy bases, but in others, there are "defend your home bases" type missions, protect your units from waves of enemy attacks missions, rescue copilots/prisoners of war, steal weapons/helicopters, and even getting toys from one level to use them as weapons of on subsequent levels (like a Mr. Potato Head, a toy bulldozer, etc.). One of the early levels also incorporates flipping switches in a room to open up other areas of the level, so there appears to be puzzle and strategy elements within the game as well. Another cool feature of the game is that it incorporates in-game real-time video windows that display your copilots and army men commander. The videos give mission objectives and hints about how to beat the level and Tan enemies. I can't tell you how frustrating it sometimes is when you play a game, several "voice overs" play, and you ignore them because the voice overs get lost in the explosions and/or "heat of the moment" of trying to fly around. When the in-game videos play in Air Attack 2, you can't help but be drawn to the helpful video messages from your copilots and commander appear! Every level that I've played so far appears to be populated with these helpful in-game videos. The music in the game also is great! Rather than play some generic music, some levels appear to have music specifically tailored to those types of "themes". There's a western level that plays western type music and even a Japanese garden level that has Asian type music. It's this level of detail that really enhances the gameplay experience! There are also multiplayer modes in the game with different styles of gameplay. There's a Co-operative mode where you can beat the missions with a friend, and another set of multiplayer modes that offer mini-games. There's "Bug Hunt" where you have to kill insects, "Food Fight" where you have to collect food for points, "Flag Nab It" which is like capture the flag, and "Aerial Assault" where you dogfight against your opponent. I think this game is pretty good, and I think you'll have fun playing it.

This is one of the best Army Men games to date. The graphics looks really great, and the game controls are right on. The best part is, this is the only PS2 game that has COOPERATIVE mode! It's great being able to beat your friends in the versus mode, but being able to play cooperatively is awesome. This one is a must buy for anyone who is looking for a fun pick-up and go shooter game.

My brother and I (both of us in our 30's) rented this game one Saturday morning and couldn't stop till it was long past dinner time! What a blast! The cinemas in between missions are entertaining, the music isn't monotonous, and the game play was obviously very addictive. This game is just as much fun as a single player as it is w/ a partner- even my 5 year old enjoyed winching up all the goodies and launching them into the Tan bases and tanks. Having the added feature of choosing co-pilots with special expertises/ammunition really expanded the gameplay. This is a lot of fun- I will definately purchase it in the near future.
