3DO ended up in bankruptcy by developing three gaming franchises and then milking them to death. One of those franchises consisted of the "Army Men" games.

"Army Men Air Combat" came out three years prior to this game on the N64. 3DO was desperate to rush out more titles and this "Elite Missions" edition is just an opportunistic cash-in of their previous work. That's not to say that the game is an all-out disaster, because it's not. It's just completely derivatave of other games in this same franchise and provides a rather shallow bit of gameplay.

There are 20 missions in the "Campaign" mode. The one feature of this game that I enjoyed was the option of playing through the story in Single Player or Co-operative Mode. I really wish all similar games would have that feature. Multiplayer Modes (which this game has 4 of) are sometimes kind of fun but it gets real old real fast and it is a much richer gaming experience playing through fully developed levels with a friend.

Overall, however, the game suffers from a variety of problems. Almost every level is the same thing. You fly around (in all missions) and have to destroy the Tan army's tanks, helicopters, special weapons and military bases. You sometimes have to land on a helicopter pad and rescue people as well. That's about it. The framerate when there is action on screen is HORRIBLE! It gets very choppy and that is totally unacceptable for a bland game such as this. The auto lock-on feature of your helicopter goes all over the place and it is difficult to always know where your shots are going to end up.

The game is beatable in only two days so you don't get much for your money. One final note: I feel it is my duty as a civilized human being to tell you about the last level in the game. It consists of you flying up to the leader of the Tan army and launching several bombs at him. My friend's kid just turned 9 last week and he beat the game's final level in 14 seconds (yup...we timed him for fun.) That is a total slap in the face! If we're lucky, the "Army Men" series will be permanently MIA.

I read a review on IGN that stated how this game looks just like the old Army Men Elite Missions on the old consoles.Well I played the old Army Men and they were great and awsome looking which this one delivers in the same way. It has good graphics not Resident Evil but still good. The sound effects and controls are very well done and level design is easy to find your way around in. All my friends thought it would be stupid but loved it after trying it out and agreed that IGN is so far of on there review. Try it out you more then likely wont regret it and will love it if your a fan of the series.

My son loves pretty much all the Army Men games. This was no exception. Just wish they would come out with more of them that would be compatible on today's computers, as well.
