5.0 out of 5 stars Great rice cooker for the money
I picked this cooker up from Costco for under thirty bucks. If you don't want to spend a lot on a computerized rice cooker, this is the one for you. It's the cheapest fuzzy logic rice cooker on the market, but still makes great rice. It doesn't have a bunch of extra functions you'd never use, just white rice, brown rice, quick rice, and steam cook.

2.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not good for brown rice
This rice cooker makes white rice just fine, but when making brown rice it takes FOREVER, and the rice doesn't come out that tasty. I can make nice, fluffy brown rice on the stove in about 45 minutes, but for some reason the "Brown Rice" mode on this cooker takes nearly 2 hours to complete. I have also tried using the "Quick Rice" mode, which completes sooner, but the...

You have to play around a little with the amount of water when cooking the rice. If it's too dry, just add a little bit more water and leave it in keep warm mode for about 15 minutes. If you're planning on using keep warm mode, you also have to add a bit more water to keep the rice from burning to the bottom.

I've used mine for everything from steaming veggies to making steel cut oats. One thing I particularly like is that when you set the timer for steaming, it doesn't start counting down until the water is actually boiling.

The only thing I'd like better was if there were extra internal bowls available. I had originally bought this one thinking to use it until I got a more expensive rice cooker, but that purchase has been put on hold indefinitely simply because this one works so well.

To make steel cut oats, I use the brown rice function due to the long soaking time. Just add 4 cups water to every 1 cup of oats. Also add pat of butter or a bit of oil to the water to keep it from boiling over, and a pinch of salt. You can add raisins or other dried fruit if you like. I usually make a double batch, and it comes out perfect every time. Perfectly cooked with that unique chewy steel cut oat texture. No more soaking and making it on the stove for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Rice Cooker, April 10, 2009

I almost always eat brown rice. I had a Black & Decker Rice cooker, which always left the brown rice clumpy and burnt on the bottom. I ran into this Arc-1000 at Costco (for $29!!) and figured I could always take it back if I didn't like it. Not! I am very happy w/this. The brown rice is a whole different texture, much more fluffy. It tastes like brown rice is supposed to taste. The steamer offers another way to cook healthy. It comes w/ recipes for one pot meals, and soups. It is very easy to use. You put it measured rice, add water to pre-measured line, close it and push a button, it does the rest.
The Arc-1000 was leaving some bottom rice a bit darker, so I'll take the hint of turning it off. That would make it even better, but it wasn't as bad as the B&D. If you are looking for a good inexpensive rice cooker (I was shocked at how much you can spend on these) that does a great job, go for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Does great with rice and more, January 2, 2009

I wanted a rice cooker that specifically had a brown rice function since we love brown rice but it can be so hard to cook it well other ways (I've tried stovetop, pressure cooker, and baking in the oven).

So far, I'm thrilled - the brown rice was amazing, first try; I've also done bulgur and quinoa using the white rice setting and both have been perfect with no adjustments. I love that the pot is non-stick and that the condensation from the lid is caught in a reservoir - it doesn't go down the side of the pot or inside where it's going to damage the cooker itself.

Delay timer is also extremely helpful - if I know I want dinner at six, I can set the cooker up any time (allowing for cooking time) and have the rice ready right on time without having to think about it. The cooking cycle is long but worth it for the results.

One caveat - whatever you are cooking will crust to the bottom the longer you leave it on "keep warm" - I suggest you turn it off as soon as it's done. It will remain warm in the pot for a time with the lid closed anyway. And if you use the delay timer, you can schedule it to be done right on time anyway.

4.0 out of 5 stars great rice cooker, March 26, 2009

I think this rice cooker is great, although we've only cooked white rice so far. The "quick rice" option is indeed a few minutes quicker, and we can't really tell any difference between the quick cooked rice and the result of the regular "white rice" program.

I agree that the reservoir for condensed water is a smart feature. I also like that there is a holder for the rice spoon on the side of the rice cooker. That should discourage users from leaving the plastic spoon inside and letting it melt on the teflon.

I also second the advice for unplugging the rice cooker after it is done cooking. The body is insulated well enough that the rice will easily stay warm during your meal. That'll save you some electricity too.

I only wish that the power cord could be detached from the body so that it is easier to bring to the table for dinner.

*We got this for cheaper at Costco, ~$40.

I have owned other rice cookers over the years. With other rice cookers, brown rice and seasoned rice both have a tendency to become crispy on the bottom, when the heating element remains on for too much time. I am happy to say that this rice cooker finally let me make perfect rice every time.

This rice cooker has a temperature sensor that regulates how much heat is applied to the rice, depending on the type - long grain, brown, instant - resulting in perfect rice every time I have used it.

I also like the small condensation collector that holds any of the moisture that drips from the lid, keeping my counter and cooker clean.

I spent hours researching rice cookers before deciding to buy this one. As a recent convert to healthy eating and cooking, this machine was just what I needed. It had to be simple - I am not a cook and once caught my kitchen on fire trying to make garlic bread! It had to make great rice on it's own, cause my first stovetop attempts to make rice looked more like cement than rice. It also had to make large amounts of rice at a time because I am pre-packaging lunches for my husband so he can eat healthy while at work. This machine delivers on all counts. It is foolproof - follow the directions and you get perfect rice every time - it's that simple! I love the delay timer function - I can setup everything for dinner and it is ready to eat when I come home from the gym at night. The keep warm function is great - cause it doesn't matter if I'm a few minutes late getting home. And yes, like some people have stated in previous reviews, it will turn brown on the bottom if you leave it on keep warm for too long - but I kinda like it when it does that - it just adds a little color to the rice - it doesn't burn it. Heck, I make mostly brown rice anyway! This also steams perfectly and the unit is super easy to clean. And the removable non-stick inner pot is great - I just pull it out when the rice is done, add a bag of veggies and some chicken or fish, mix it up in the same pot, and dinner is served! I LOVE this rice cooker and I would give it 10 stars if I could. Like the dehydrator and bread machine I also have from Aroma, this cooker does exactly what it is supposed to do, and does it well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing for the price, January 28, 2010

This review is from: Aroma ARC-1000 Professional Series 10-Cup Sensor Logic Rice Cooker (Kitchen)
I did a lot of research online before choosing this rice cooker. It received the highest ratings in blog reviews when people were testing it out against other brands. I love brown rice but never have the time to cook it,being a full time student and also working a full time job. This fixed that problem. Yes, if you use the delay setting the rice will brown a little on the bottom but it is never overcooked. Also, in some cultures, the browned rice on the bottom is desirable and actually quite tasty! But you could play around with the water function. Do remember it takes about an hour or more of soaking the brown rice, so if you are using the delay figure in the extra time. I always figure two hours less on the delay so the rice is actually done when I come back home.

I have done every imaginable type of rice in here. The only types that dont do well are minute rice and Uncle Bens brown rice, which is an inferior rice anyway. It turns into what looks like oatmeal.

I have also cooked lentils in here on the white rice function. I had to add extra water as the first time they came out like paste!

One final thing, that just makes this the absolute best for me, is that it cleans up easy and fast, even if the rice browns on the bottom it comes right out and washing it you need nothing more than a sponge, no scrubbing!

I have also tried using the "Quick Rice" mode, which completes sooner, but the rice comes out too chewy. Also, as other reviewers have mentioned, if you leave the rice in the cooker for more than an hour on "Keep Warm" the rice will end up burned. The vegetable steaming function works well. So, if you primarily make white rice and generally eat the rice right away this cooker is fine, but if not, I would look for something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Rice Cooker, September 3, 2010
This review is from: Aroma ARC-1000 Professional Series 10-Cup Sensor Logic Rice Cooker (Kitchen)
I have owned this rice cooker for about 6 months. The Aroma rice cooker makes perfect rice every time I use it. In addition to it providing great rice every time, the directions that come with the cooker are clear and effective. Although, I have only made 1 and 3 cups of rice at a time, but every time it is excellent. I had always wondered how the rice at Italian, Chinese, Thai, Korean, Japanese and Indian restaurants turned out so good; well, now I know. Any type of rice I toss in it, turns out just like it does at the different ethnic restaurants mentioned above. I have made plain white, brown, and wild rice(black and red grains). I have made rice pilaf, sweet rice(extremely glutenous desert rice), Arborio rice(Italian short to medium grain for risotto), Sushi/Sticky rice(Japanese short grain glutenous rice), Basmati rice(Indian), Cal-rose rice, Botan rice(Korean rice) and Jasmine rice(Thai). All have turned out just like they should without any difficulty.

I have even made Quinoa (alternative to rice from South America), Couscous(Semolina Wheat that are like small spaghetti pellets), and Bulgur(Bulgur Wheat used in Middle Eastern cuisine) in the rice cooker. All three turned out great, but the bulgur was more difficult to make, so it took me a few tries.

I am not affiliated with, do not work for, or own stock in any company that makes the Aroma Professional Rice cooker. I am just an average guy that appreciates it when a company makes a products works well, saves time, and avoids problems by being a trouble free, set and forget unit. Really great product so far.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a great experience!, April 29, 2010
This review is from: Aroma ARC-1000 Professional Series 10-Cup Sensor Logic Rice Cooker (Kitchen)
This is my first rice cooker so I tried several attempts to get good rice out of it. I did maybe twice. I experimented a few times adding more water but most of the time I got dry, crusty rice on the bottom. I figured out that I had to stop it before it was done otherwise it would burn. That's when I followed directions exactly. I thought it was me because I have issues making rice in a regular pot too. But I really think this rice cooker cooks too hot. So we are taking it back. I also got it at Costco.
