Rice Cooker,

This review is from: Aroma Pot Style Non-Stick Rice Cooker and Food Steamer (Kitchen)
I bought this rice cooker from Target for $15. I've had it for a few months now and it works great and cooks the rice easily. The rice comes out really good and it is easy to use. You can cook vegetables at the same time. When it's done cooking the rice it goes into "warm" mode and keeps it nice and warm for you so you get it fresh. It is very light weight and easy to wash. No mess and ideal for a college student or family. It can cook rice for five people. Worth buying if you want a simple rice cooker, comes with a one year warranty. I don't expect it to last years but it's worth buying because you don't have to worry about cooking your own rice and having it come out bad. You can cook small or big amount of rice. Not bad for a low price rice cooker.

Very Bad Non-stick Layer,

I have been using this red rice cooker for less than 4 months and now it is completely unusable. I know how to gently clean a non-stick thing but this one is driving me crazy. The non-stick layer just keeps falling off, especially at the bottom.
I have to say the cheapest rice cooker I could find in China (cost me 90 RMB/12 US dolloars) works way way better than this one. I cook with it for all my fourth year at college and it was still working well. I even gave it to my friend as a Goodbye-gift when I graduated and left the country. I used to think today a rice cooker with a bad non-stick layer couldn't be put on the market until I met Aroma. It feels bad when you find yourself eating the rice and the invisible fallen layer pieces at the same time. Very disappointed. I am going to buy a Zojirushi, which is twice more expensive but can last much longer, even 5 years, according to some reviews.

Untimely death, NO customer service,
This review is from: Aroma Pot Style Non-Stick Rice Cooker and Food Steamer (Kitchen)
Bought this rice cooker a bit over a year ago relying on mainly good reviews and the fact we didn't want to spend much.
We should have saved our money. The unit has simply stopped working. Attempts to get a reply from Aroma customer service have failed. The laughable "warranty" has expired, and even if it had not the cost of shipping and handling exceeds the cost of buying a new one. I finally tried to fix it myself, but it appears some sort of switch is broken and I have no idea how to get a replacement.

Pleased at first...,

I owned this little rice cooker for less than a year, and was pleased at first. It cooked rice beautifully, and was easy to clean. I especially liked the sturdy spoon/spatula included with the cooker, which I've put to use in other cooking duties.
The big disappointment is that it just stopped working one day. I never overloaded the cooker, and didn't immerse the cooker in water -- it just died without explanation. So I'll give it 3 stars for the initial performance and the chance that the little appliance I bought had a fluky short life span.

Not bad for the price, but not built to last either,

This is a good value rice cooker. I think I bought mine at Target, but I've had it for 5+ years now & I may have gotten mine somewhere else. If you just want something basic, it does a good job at cooking rice and keeping it warm. It was designed for white rice though so if you are into brown rice or some of the other firm types of rice you may need to soak them for a while first. As I said before I have had mine for at least 5 years, which is a good length of time given that I paid very little for it. However it has just recently stopped working. I was disappointed by that since my parents have a cheap rice cooker that is still working even though it is at least 40+ years old now. It's too cheap to repair it so I decided to just buy another rice cooker, but this time I'll try a different brand.

I received this rice cooker as a birthday gift 3 years ago. When I first started using it it worked fairly well except that it never switched off when the rice was finished. I often ended up with a good amount of crispy, burned rice at the bottom. I learned to watch the rice as I eventually figured out approximately how long different types of rice needed to be cooked. That worked for a while, but perhaps a year ago the warm/hot switch started malfunctioning. The switch now pops up from cook to warm every minute or two, completely defeating the purpose of having a hands-off rice cooker. I honestly think at this point I would be better off cooking my rice in a pot with a lid rather than fussing with my Aroma. I really need a rice cooker that I can set and forget, and will thus be doing some research. Hopefully it will work out better for me this time around.

I've hesitated buying a rice cooker for years. I've thought, "What can a rice cooker do, that a pan on the stove can't do?" After a friend extolled the virtues of her rice cooker, I thought, "OK, maybe I'll pick one up." I found this model on sale at a local store, brought it home and tried it out. Now I'm wondering why I've waited so long to buy one. I've fixed white, brown and wild rice in this cooker with great results. My family especially likes a brown and wild rice mix and this also came out great! For the price, you can't go wrong.

I seen a friend using one just like this and it appeared to be really easy to use. I bought one May 12th 2010 and have been using it twice a day to cook my rice. Another friend told me to use chicken broth instead of water to cook the rice in and it works great. The non-stick finish shows some wear after six months, but not much. I make sure I only use a soft sponge to clean it with inside the pot. It should last me several more years if it keeps going like it has been.
It comes with a little plastic cup and I dump one of those full of rice (long grain white Jasmine from Thailand) and one and 1/2 of the little cups full of chicken broth and turn it on. Cooks perfect every time. If I want more rice, I put in two cups of rice and three cups of broth, turns out great. I don't know how it knows when the rice is done, but it does, which is really nice for someone like me who has never cooked rice before. It also came with the steamer tray. I've used that about once a week and find myself wishing it were a little larger (taller). If I steam cabbage in it, I have to slice the head into about one inch slices so they will all fit in the tray and let the lid close. It seams cabbage and cauliflower just right. I'm really happy with it and plan on buying their smaller one for the days when not as much rice is desired. Aroma ARC-717-1NGR 14-Cup Rice Cooker & Food Steamer

I purchased this cooker last July and regret not looking into a new Hitachi to replace the old one which lasted over 14 years (do they still make them?). Unlike my Hitachi, this Chinese made "beauty" MUST be unplugged once it stops cooking, otherwise it'll burn the rice at the bottom, and better hurry to stir it once you unplug it as it is in the process of turning white rice into "brown". Careful with the rim of the pot as it'll give you a blister if you touch it. Another nuisance is that the cord is not removable like my old Hitachi, making it impossible to place the cooker on the dining table. I miss the old reliable Japanese products. How did we become so dependent on lower standards?
