4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly simple and practical for 1 or 2

Now that he is about to take his cooker with him to a job overseas, I had to finally get my own! This review is from: Aroma ARC703G 3-cup Rice Cooker with Glass Lid (Kitchen)
I bought one of these cookers to prepare brown and white rice. I'd read so many reviews stating that these simple machines would do beautiful rice, just without the bells and whistles of the more expensive machines. '

Wrong. As other reviewers have stated, my cooker bubbled water and steam out the lid, even when doing less than capacity. Additionally, the rice tended to stick in the container even after using Pam beforehand. Brown rice was a particular nightmare.

After wrestling with this appliance for a couple of weeks, I ordered a fuzzy logic National (Panasonic) 3-cup model (I'm single and don't need much). My new electronic cooker does all it's claimed to do. It prepares beautiful rice of all types, including Basmati and brown. It keeps rice warm and delicious for up to 13 hours after cooking. It can delay-start the rice so it'll be fresh when you get home from work. I often make flavored rices using broths or bouillons; these flavors always end up uniform in the rice, and without excessive sticking in the pot. My National machine has a smooth white plastic exterior and lid that stay cool and the finish is very easy to keep clean. The pot insert is non-stick; there's usually about a tablespoon of rice sticking to the bottom that just wipes out (some people like to eat this). The cord is retractable into the bottom and the top has a built in handle to store it easily. A terrific appliance!

Don't waste your money on a cheapie machine. Save if you have to, and get one of the new 'fuzzy logic' cookers. They truly are better made. Amazon sells Zojirushi, which is top-notch but also high-priced.

Also, keep your eyes open for cookbooks on rice cooker cookery. These appliances can do much, much more than just rice!

1.0 out of 5 stars I received this as Christmas present, December 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Aroma ARC703G 3-cup Rice Cooker with Glass Lid (Kitchen)
The steam and rice water spurts out the top vent hole, and seeps out under its cover, runs down the outside of the pot, and makes a mess of kitchen counters and cabinets.

When it's done cooking, one fourth of the rice is stuck to the bottom of the pot. The manufacturers must be aware of this, as the instructions state: "If you experience sticking, try spraying with a light coat of cooking oil before adding water and rice"-- it doesn't work, nothing seems to help; it only increases the amount of rice burned in the bottom of the pot.

Also, when it's finished steaming and the light goes off, it's still using the electrical power source, so you need to remember to physically unplug the cord, otherwise it continues to consume electrical power.

To clean, it has to be soaked, at least over night, using soapy water, then scrubbed.

After struggling with this all year, I'm happy to say I got a new Krups rice cooker this Christmas, and can't wait to throw this into the garbage!

After using my roomate's rice cooker for over a year, I have found that I reach for that over a regular pot whenever I cook white rice. Now that he is about to take his cooker with him to a job overseas, I had to finally get my own! Truly, this is no great shakes of kitchen technology, not very far removed from an old hot pot, but given that the cooking of rice is such a simple task itself, this is a fine marriage.

As for the Aroma 3 cup model (the only one I am familiar with) I can tell you that I have had very little trouble with it. I have never had rice burn on me (the auto shut down function is great) but I have had a few crispy brown sections (like with baked rice, more of a pleasure than a gripe by far)! I also like the fact that I can set it up virtually anywhere and free up space in the apartment kitchen, not a grand hall. I have not used it for steaming, but I might see if it holds it own there.

All in all, if you are only cooking for one or two people, the Aroma 3 cup Rice Cooker is a very good value for the covenience and reliablity it has shown, and you will be doing yourself a favor by getting one.

2.0 out of 5 stars great product for occasional rice cooking, June 20, 2000
This review is from: Aroma ARC703G 3-cup Rice Cooker with Glass Lid (Kitchen)
It is a decent rice cooker for occasional usage. There are two major shortcomings: one is that it is relatively hard to clean if you leave rice in it for a while since it doesnot have non-stick pot. You cannot leave the cooker on with rice in it for more than 2 hours since the rice with dry up with the sealing lid. For its price, you get what you paid for.

3.0 out of 5 stars It does what its supposed to, June 1, 2001

This review is from: Aroma ARC703G 3-cup Rice Cooker with Glass Lid (Kitchen)
... The old maxim you get what you pay for is very true in this case. I used this guy throughout college and it worked great for my needs at the time.

Yes this thing will burn rice, it has to otherwise it won't cook properly. I had a non-stick version of this type and it was horrendous. The hard rice on the edge would get mixed in with the good stuff and I would have crunchy bits in my rice. So when it burns rice onto the pan, thats what it is supposed to do.

...you have to wash the rice on these guys very well. Unfortunately when you wash away the white milky stuff you are also washing away nutrients.

So the final word is this guy gets the job done, not any better than a pot on the stove though. I now have the Zojirushi fuzzy logic and that thing kicks butt. If you can spare the cash its well worth every penny. Doesn't burn any rice and rice is perfect every time. The only thing you can screw up is the amount of water you put in.

3.0 out of 5 stars first rice cooker, August 12, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Aroma ARC703G 3-cup Rice Cooker with Glass Lid (Kitchen)
This was our first rice cooker and it was a great way for us to decide whether we liked rice cooker rice cooked at home. We have since given the cooker to our daughter and purchased a larger one for home. She uses it at college and loves the results.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this one!, May 23, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Aroma ARC703G 3-cup Rice Cooker with Glass Lid (Kitchen)
I was so excited about getting this rice cooker, but it's been a total disappointment! It sprays foamy water all over the place through the vent-hole in the lid, like onto the counter, the floor, the side of the cooker, you, and anything else nearby. The directions that come with it are for the larger model that has a "warm" cycle, so I can't tell if this cooker turns off automatically, but it doesn't seem to. It always burns the rice even though I turn it off as soon as the water quits spraying all over the room. Also, the recipe booklet that comes with it, "Yan Can Cook", doesn't have anything to do with this cooker. Most of the recipes, in fact, don't have anything to do with ANY cooker, and involve stir-frying in a wok or using an iron skillet or saucepan, and don't even mention a cooker/steamer. Anyway, I'm going to return it to Wal-mart and get my money back and buy a good one somewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars Get what you pay for..., November 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Aroma ARC703G 3-cup Rice Cooker with Glass Lid (Kitchen)
I'm not sure if this is the exact brand of the rice cooker that I have, but it is essentially the same, and I can't stand it. The liquid bubbles out of the vent hole in the cover, and makes a mess that requires a good scrubbing to clean. I have also never been able to make a single pot of rice without it burning to the bottom of the pot. I need to let it soak with soapy water in it over-night to clean it. I went back to using a regular sauce-pan, and what a pleasure. I take back my title, you don't even get what you pay for with this rice cooker...it is a complete waste of money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, April 19, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Aroma ARC703G 3-cup Rice Cooker with Glass Lid (Kitchen)
I have had one of these rice cookers for the past 6 years. I am replacing it because I shattered the Glass Lid on the floor this evening. We use it at least 2-3 times a week to make sticky rice. When I do make rice I only make 1 cup at a time (enough for myself and my husband), so we don't seem to have the ... problem ...with the overflowing. We have had the rice burn on the bottom, as a simple solution I just soak the pot with hot water overnight and give it a light scrub the next morning..that seems to work great for me. I have and will continue to recommended this product to my friends/family.
