Buyer beware - dangerous advice in this book!,
By
This review is from: Aromatherapy Book: Inhalations and Applications (Jeanne Rose Herbal Library) (Paperback)
I don't like to pan books, but unfortunately Jeanne Rose has written a book containing many dangerous recommendations. The Aromatherapy Book is not a good book for anyone but advanced aromatherapy practitioners with a solid knowledge of essential oil safety. Some of the dangerous suggestions in this book include using highly irritating and sensitizing cinnamon bark oil for head lice, putting sensitizing Peru Balsam on broken and chapped skin, and baths and skin treatment with lemon verbena, an oil so phototoxic and sensitizing that it has been banned in European perfumery. Rose even suggests using sassafras oil and tea without mentioning that both contain a potent carcinogen and are FDA banned. It's a pity that Rose paid so little attention to safety, because there are some very creative uses of essential oils and lots of interesting stories and history in the book. There are sections on spiritual and emotional uses of essential oils, vendor listings, and a nice chapter on natural perfumery. Just remember that if you choose to buy this book, you must doublecheck all of the essential oil uses against some very reliable safety information.

I like this book so much I need another copy!,

This review is from: Aromatherapy Book: Inhalations and Applications (Jeanne Rose Herbal Library) (Paperback)
I use this book so often as a great reference source that I wore mine out. It has wonderful cross-referencing for the essential oils, recipes, history, uses etc. Jeanne has also included little symbols to alert users to the volatility/toxicity of certain oils as well. The first book I would recommend to someone who wants to get started in this field.

Aromatherapy Applications and Inhalations,
By Warreen Phillips (Elgin,, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aromatherapy Book: Inhalations and Applications (Jeanne Rose Herbal Library) (Paperback)
I just read a rather scathing review of Ms Rose's book. Quite frankly I have studied with her at a two day intensive. She is one of the leaders in the aromatherapy revolution here in the US and has more published titles on the subject than most in her field. She is a marine botonist by education and is also very, very dedicated to the aromatherapy industry. She helped organize NAHA, the Aromatic Plant Project, and has also done a lot of behind the scenes advocacy work on keeping the ethical standards high of producers of essential oils. Yes this book is not as well organized as it could be, I believe this is her first attempt at publishing. I use this book in my classroom, because it is a little easier to use than the more techincal books because it is on the primer side which makes it excellent for not blowing away someone who knows nothing of aromatherapy. It is excellent in that its quick references in the front of it are fast and easy to use for identification of the correct eoils on various disorders. I am sorry the reader was disenchanted with the publication. I find Jeannie to be a very matter of fact person who should be getting more recognition for her work in our field. Excellent source of information,
By A Customer
This review is from: Aromatherapy Book: Inhalations and Applications (Jeanne Rose Herbal Library) (Paperback)
This book is far more than just a source of suppliers. That person who said that must have only looked at it for about 10 seconds. It tells you about what almost every essential oil does, and it has several useful tables and charts. The only aspect that might not be the most clear is HOW to use each oil for the purposes mentioned. It might be good to supplement this book with another that covers more practical application methods. However, I can't imagine a better resource for researching so many different essential oils than this book.

This review is from: Aromatherapy Book: Inhalations and Applications (Jeanne Rose Herbal Library) (Paperback)
Jeanne Rose, affectionatley known as the Grand Dame of aromatherapy to those in the field, has compiled over the years a wealth of practical and researched information about aromatherapy. With her charming humor she weaves the history of aromatherapy. In this book you will find almost anything you would want to know about aromatherapy including recipes, her own and others, from skin care to pet care. She even covers the unusual aspects of aromatherapy such as the musical and chakra qualities of essential oils. An excellent book for beginners or beyond.

Indispensable Aromatherapy Primer,
By Kimberly Ayers (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aromatherapy Book: Inhalations and Applications (Jeanne Rose Herbal Library) (Paperback)
It was because of this book that I started my avid interest in aromatherapy which led me to taking advanced education with Ms. Rose and gaining my aromatherapy certification. You will not find alot of recipes in this book, but it is an excellent book for looking up particular essential oils, finding their properties, cautions etc. for both the beginner and advanced aromatherapy student. The aromatherapy reference charts listed in the book are indispensable and there is even a Chakra and Color chart as well. It is direct, and written in layman's terms. I myself have 2 copies of the book because I wore out the first one! I find Ms. Rose's personal stories that are weaved throughout the book delightful and because of her particular style of writing - have every book that Ms. Rose has ever written.

Informative,
By
This review is from: Aromatherapy Book: Inhalations and Applications (Jeanne Rose Herbal Library) (Paperback)
This book lets the beginner know all about aromatherapy. I'm a beginner and it gives more than enough information for me to mix and blend oils for healing. It has a section defining different terms used in aromatherapy. I find this very helpful because I like to know the meaning of words so that I will know what I'm talking about while explaining terms to friends.

This review is from: Aromatherapy Book: Inhalations and Applications (Jeanne Rose Herbal Library) (Paperback)
The Aromatherapy Book has great descriptions of the oils and their many uses along with various ways to use the oils. Conditions are listed along with the oils that will address these conditions. Carrier oils are listed and the best ones for certain types of skin are highlighted. Sources in various countries make it easy to find suppliers of essential oils. Recipes are given and there is a chapter on how to make your own oils along with diagrams. Much useful and informative information.

I've used this book for quite a while now, and have not found a recipe that does not work. This is an excellent resource for essential oil usage and blends that are right on the money. My family loves this book--especially the cold remedies and bath soaks-- Keep an eye on this author, she knows what she's doing.
