Just so you know,
By A Customer
This review is from: Aromatherapy: Soothing Remedies to Restore, Rejuvenate and Heal (Paperback)
As someone who has only recently gotten interested in Aromatherapy, I found this book to be most educational. But just so you know, this book is the same book as Valerie Gennari Cooksley's Aromatherapy: A Lifetime Guide to Healing With Essential Oils. It just has a new cover, a slightly different name and an updated sources list. Ms. Cooksley is a registered nurse and writes with quite a bit of knowledge about her subject. Where essential oils come from, how they affect the different systems of the body, various and assorted formulas for making healing blends, several case studies, and a brief description of several of the more essential of essential oils. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it to be a title that will be quite useful for years to come.

A Decent Beginner Book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Aromatherapy: A Lifetime Guide to Healing with Essential Oils (Paperback)
I have read this book and feel it is good for a beginning reference. However, there were some flaws with this book. When the author referred to certain recipes on a different page the referring page was always off by a page or two. The author refers to infusions as a carrier to use in certain recipes but gives no specific ingredients or amounts. The only reference made to infusions was for tea and water ratios for children. One section in particular the author refers to herbs that one can use for a recipe on the following page. But when you turn the page to find the herbs she spoke of there is no mention of them. Within several paragraphs the author lists other oils and other recipes. I feel for ease of reference these other oils or recipes mentioned should have been bolded or boxed. It would have also been nice if the essential oils were cross-referenced with other complimentary essential oils for blending. Substitution essential oils would have also been a thoughtful touch. I was disappointed to find only one company listed at the back of the book for resources.

This was the first book I puchased on aromatherapy, and I must say that it is the best book I have read!!! Not only does she include recipes, she also includes the essential oil reference guide, which is my favorite part, because she gives you a breakdown of not only the origin name, but what the physical and the psycho-emotional benefits are to the essential oils. She also gives you a headstart on how to make your own formulas, by including a blending chart. Please pick up this book, if not any other book.

Oil on the pages, herbs stuck in the binding...,

...this book has been abused, beaten and much loved. As someone who loves working with oils, essences, herbs and the like, I have to say this book is among my top two! Whenver a healing blend is needed, I find myself reaching for this book first. The easy language makes it accessible even to my partner, who barely dabbles in these things. The herbal tea blends included are phenomenal. The blends translate well to massage oils, room scenting oils, soaps and candles, you name it!If you a a magical person looking to get into blending, put this volume next to your Cunningham!

This book gets 4 stars instead of 5 simply because it doesn't cover much history of essential oils, or really their creation and how they're made, or essential oils by themselves in detail. What it does do is cover a huge variety of conditions and beauty regimens with detail, then with an arsenal of EO combinations, and much more. It's a delight to read, even if it is a bit on the serious side, delving deeply into the world of aromatherapy. The author obviously holds these gems in high regard, making much use of her time by detailing personal experiences, ideas, theories, and reasons for her motivations. It really is very good - if you're in the market for a great introduction filled with recipes, advice, and information, it's a good place to look. However, if you want to know more, it's better to accompany it with another, fuller guide in the future.

Great imformation & introduction into the world of Aromatheraphy. 100's of recipes with clear mixing & safety instructions. I've been reading lots of material on Aromatheraphy this one is my favorite. I refer to chap 15 - Blending How-To's every time I create a blend! This book will motivate you to start creating. I used 'Hearts & Roses Aromatheraphy 101 Kit' to get started, which includes 10 oils. I am looking to move on to essential oils that are not only 100% pure but are also ORGANIC (& more expen$ive). As Cooksley explains, these are chemical free (ie: no insecticides, etc. used in growing)...buy the book!

Cooksley's book is a useful & practical aromatherapy guide,
By A Customer
This review is from: Aromatherapy: A Lifetime Guide to Healing with Essential Oils (Paperback)
I am a certified massage therapist interested in integrating aromatherapy into my practice. I found this text to be straight-forward with a good grounding in history, cautions about essential oils, references (very important!) and listings of additional sources to pursue.
I always have trouble finding factual, practical information on such "soft arts" as massage and aromatherapy which do not include "new age" aspects that a practitioner of health arts usually is not interested in, at least to obtain a starting basic knowledge.
I would recommend Cooksley's aromatherapy to anyone interested in the basics of aromatherapy and its many applications. Cooksley's explanations are clear, her recipes are good, she has a variety of ways to use essential oils. Most of all, her background in nursing and health arts is reassuring to me that her information comes from a grounding in SAFE essential oil use.

I have an aromatherapy business and am always looking for additional material to read. You will find educational information as well as easy to prepare recipes using readily available ingredients. This book is a great resource when looking up properties of certain ingredients such as essential oils. I highly recommend this book it was well worth the money.
