Editorial Reviews

2012 collaborative album by Quantic and Alice Russell, the Tru Thoughts label's two all-time biggest selling artists. Look Around The Corner sees the duo of Quantic and Alice Russell revisiting the spirit of their hugely popular previous collaborations (with the Quantic Soul Orchestra, for example) but this time backed by Quantic's world-renowned Combo B rbaro and recorded in Quantic's adopted home city of Cali, Colombia. The combined talents of singer Alice Russell and producer/musician Will Holland (AKA Quantic) have always been a match made in heaven, and the vibrant sound of this beautiful album is a fresh blend of pure sweet Soul and Blues, with overtones of Gospel and Folk music and the added Latin swing of the Combo B rbaro.

Will Holland aka Quantic has been in the game for well over a decade and in that time has built an impressive catalogue of albums and singles Best of Quantic remixesOne Offs Remixes & B Sides (Rmxs), and productions I'm Thankful that any artist would be proud to claim. He is a consistently interesting and inquiring artist studying the world of music. He has successfully added his stamp to a vast array of musical styles -trying his hand at everything from funk and soul, afrobeat, ethiopian jazz and now cumbia from Colombia. Look Around the Corner is his definitive statement in this area and he has concocted a heady mix that looks backwards and forwards and melds together all of his talents in a master stroke of a project. Once again he is partnered with long time collaborator and highly under-rated vocalist Alice Russell and his Combo Barbaro who he has been working with for the last five years down in Colombia. Every track reeks of musicality and a real passion for the endeavor. It is at times majestic as in the title track which features lush, swirling strings that recall the work of Charles Stepney of Chess Records; other times whimsical like in the track Su Suzy and Boogaloo 33! There is a wonderful remake of Caston & Majors' Keep a Light in my Window caston & majors LPwhich has long been an underground classic that here gets the royal treatment. Elsewhere you'll find updated takes on boogaloo, bolero, cumbia, 60's soul and funk styles. Holland pulls it off and it all sounds effortless and timeless. A great record to welcome in Spring 2012.

Sorry, didn mean to get overexcited. My daughter introduced me to this album, and I'm glad she did. Alice has the voice of a black soul singer: she also has excellent vocal control and emotion. Another in a long line of first class English female vocalists (Jessie Ware, Adele, Joss Stone, Dusty Springfield, etc). Highly recommend this!

I'm a fan of a few of Quantic's previous albums, and although the style of this one is very different from them, I LOVE IT. This is the kind of album you can put on for an afternoon by the pool, and I've been playing it on repeat since I bought it. Particularly brilliant is the heartbreaking "Su Suzy" that has all the upbeat groove of a girl group classic with an achingly sad message. Really can't stop listening to that one...

I do not think I have heard a better album. I am a fan of Alice Russell, and bought this based on that. I also love jazz, blues, funk, cumber, salsa, world, bluegrass... I tend to be a little skeptical of fusion, but this is just the bomb. I can;t stop listening. If anything I would warn that the tunes here are addictive. I played classical violin for over a decade as a young person, and this makes me want to buy a new one and get down with some rolicking tunes. Thank you Alice, Thank you Quantic, Thank you Combo Barbaro.

Got this album as a recommended listen from Okayplayer.com and this was a very SOUND investment.
I've always been a fan of Quantic...his style of music and the Combo Barbaro band are incredible!! Alice Russell has collaborated with him on several projects to date and to have a 100% Quantic/Alice Russell + Combo Barbaro in a new release!? Its a MUST have for the fans and a great pic up for those expanding their libraries

This one is probably the least inspiring Quantic album I have listened to. It's kind of ... boring? I don't know what the singer, Alice Russell, if famous for, but on this record she doesn't seem to be adding much value to the music.
