fresh sounds from the master of the story song,
By A Customer
This review is from: Around the Margins (Audio CD)
Hoekstra continues to broaden both his lyrical perspective and surrounding musical landscape on Around The Margins. Never overstated, his albums always have a way of getting under your skin somehow. This one accomplishes that with engaging lyrics, gospel backup vocals and a spinning Pignose amp... Highly recommended to those of you who are up to the challenge of listening to something different.

Why Isn't This Guy A Superstar?,
By Mark Twain (Chicago) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Around the Margins (Audio CD)
As a person not given to hyperbole, I still have to say that Doug Hoekstra's "Around The Margins" is absolutely THE BEST cd I've listened to in the last decade, and I've listened to thousands. This artist, more than anyone outside of Dylan, writes songs with such musicality, depth and intelligence that he makes much of the other music out there look like kid's stuff. Hoekstra's hard to classify, but I'd say it's kind of a folky/rockish/singer-songwriter/popish sound with several other genres mixed in, yet still coherant, and utterly listenable and original. This cd has me bouncing around the house, or sitting and listening quietly, in turns. This guy is AMAZING! A friend gave me Hoekstra's first cd several years back and I've been hooked ever since. As with his previous efforts, each and every cut off "Around The Margins" creates its own lyrical world that simply enthralls. And musically the guy's so amazingly diverse that I'm constantly surprised every time I listen to one of his records. "Around The Margins" has been in my cd player since I got it, and I've given many copies to friends and family. When I hear Hoekstra's smart, listener-pleasing records, I have to wonder to myself, "Why isn't this guy a Superstar? Why don't I hear him on every radio station on the dial?" Then I feel like a Beatles or Dylan fan who latched on before they really hit it big. If you love music--folk, rock, pop, country, whatever--you've got to get this one!
