Dennis Ogden's life parallels that of Charlie in this his first book. Born in the poverty stricken slums of northern England; raised in the black out years of England in WWII; frozen in the far north of Canada; shipped around the world by an uncaring military - all these tempered him to survive the high stress of years as a bomb squad technician. He is a decorated, honorably retired Master Sergeant. More peaceful years as a Peace Corps Volunteer at an older age have rounded out a varied career. He has taught explosive technicians in English, German and Vietnamese; field medical practices in German and French; and agricultural techniques to Mayan Indians in Spanish. Married to wife Ruth for 35 years with three grown children, he now lives in the Arizona desert, playing with his computer and operating the recreational vehicle park he and Ruth built and own.

In this novel by Dennis Ogden, his grasp of the choices that faced the poor of Europe before and after WWII reveals a deep personal knowledge. He seems to empathize with the modern immigrant searching for a new way of life in the USA. His book takes us on a family's search for answers from the slums of England, to rural Canada, through exciting episodes in the life of a bomb squad technician to a final satisfaction in the mountains of the Maya in Guatemala. His writing is clear and precise. I got very involved in the life of Charley and his family. I look forward to more from this very knowledgable writer.
