Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6A healthy pond is a wondrously populous and busy place, teeming (in spring, summer, and early autumn) with a seemingly limitless variety of life, from tiny one-celled animals and plants to large mammals and birds. In a series of vignettes, Cooper offers windows into this complex ecosystem, following each fictional (but believable and scientifically possible) episode with snippets of further information about the featured critter. Realistic illustrations in soft washes of blue and green, gold and brown keep perfect step with the readable text, presenting tranquil impressions of the ponds diverse inhabitants. (Problematically for purists, the imaginary installments contain a modicum of anthropomorphism, but for the most part it is unobtrusive.) Combine this attractive title with such fictional works as William T. Georges Long Pond series (Greenwillow) and Jennifer Deweys At the Edge of the Pond (Little, Brown, 1987; o.p.), the poems in Marilyn Singers Turtle in July (Macmillan, 1989), and Bianca Laviess photographically as well as factually appealing Lily Pad Pond (Dutton, 1989; o.p.) and youll have a fine whole-language unit on a fascinating water world.Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY

Review

"Precise ink drawings, brightened with what appear to be pastel crayons, define the animals and their habitat while giving the book its eye appeal. A good introductory book on pond life." -- Carolyn Phelan, Booklist
