Gr 2-4--Large, dramatic, full-color photographs dominate this survey of automobile racing. Even though no systematic history is included, black-and-white images of early race cars provide some historical contrast to more current models. The simple text is little more than expanded captions. Descriptions of Grand Prix cars, dragsters, and karts mention a few of the thrilling aspects of their performance. Although stock car racing is the most popular type among American fans, no photo of an American stock car race or a whole stock car appears in the book. However, the speed, danger, and colorful appeal of this sport are readily apparent. Those seeking more details may prefer the "Motorsports" series (Capstone Press), which offers dynamic color photographs of 12 different forms of automobile racing.
