(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Around the World in 90 Minutes: (+ Extra Time and Penalties) (Paperback)
Hard to believe the author of one of best ever books on soccer (Brilliant Orange) could take a fabulous idea (travel around the world immersing oneself in the local fan culture as those fans watch the World Cup Finals on TV) and completely blow it.

First of all, David Winner spends way to much time telling us about his travel troubles in making or being on flights. Note to Winner: Cut all that out if you do this project again. The guy needed to focus way more on the fans in each country.

Then despite knowing for about six months the teams (therefore the nations) involved and the schedule of group matches, he often shows up in countries searching for places to watch the matches. In this Internet age, could he not have arranged all this before hand and scoped out where to watch in each city.

The worst part is Winner lives in Rome yet ends up not actually being in Rome when Italy win the 2006 World Cup.

Lastly, the writing is so matter-of-fact, I just scratched my head as to how this could be the same writer of that seminal book on Dutch soccer, Brilliant Orange.
