Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This may well be some of the best airplane reading ever. Part travel guide, part relationship primer, Around the World in 80 Dates mixes wry dating realities with preposterously romantic settings and a slightly more than backpacker budget. Author Jennifer Cox--an experienced travel journalist--gets friends around the world to act as matchmaker for an 80-date spree, and the result is, not surprisingly, highly entertaining.

As with dates everywhere, there are good (hot Swedish guy with a floating sauna), bad (hungover kid fresh from a Metallica concert), hysterically embarrassing (a shared pedicure turning into a poorly translated wart removal ordeal) and amazing (Mr. Soul Mate, Date No. 55). Almost every man goes out of his way to create sort of an ideal date--mostly involving Champagne and boats--and Cox's smirky humor and sincere desire to meet the man of her dreams combine for a sweetly honest--and honestly sweet--exploration of romance.

The romance kicks into high gear with No. 55, which happens over several days at Burning Man. She instantly feels he's "the One," but troops through toward the finish line, even daring to include No. 55 on a later date with No. 63. They sneak time together on a few continents, and it's with him that the serious romance happens (and their first date had nothing to do with either Champagne or boats). A life lesson or two are uncovered amidst the jet lag, and Cox hands those out with hard-earned wisdom that many women will recognize from their own lives. As for whether Mr. Soul Mate really turns out to be "the One," just think of it as a good mystery and don't peek--sometimes the journey is half the fun. --Jill Lightner

Tips and Tricks from Jennifer Cox

"Traveling solo gives you
a sense of achievement."
~Jennifer Cox
Traveling Happy
"Traveling solo is brilliant," says Jennifer Cox, a seasoned travel writer and head of PR for Lonely Planet before she set out on her extraordinary journey to find Mr. Right--a quest she recounts in the delightfully witty and insightful Around the World in 80 Dates.

If the idea of traveling companion-free has been tempting you for a while, but apprehension of the unknown, or even the fear of looking like a "loser," has been holding you back, Ms. Cox has some advice that should help get you on your way, safe, happy, and confident.

"Trust your instincts."
~Jennifer Cox
Finding the One
"Take a look in the mirror. Like what you see? Good, then you’re in the right mood for dating." Finding your soul mate takes more than sheer luck or extravagant settings. It's about being in the right state of mind, suggests Jennifer Cox, who, after hitting four continents in six months in search of Mr. Right, came back with a thing or two, or ten, to share with men and women who are looking for that special someone.

From defining your "dating motto" to avoiding "date fatigue," find out how to keep your spirits high even after a date brought you low, and, most important, remember that "the One" is out there. "Don't give up. And don't settle for less than Mr. [or Mrs.] Right."

From Publishers Weekly

There's a new bachelorette on the scene, only this one is a writer first and a boy-crazy speed-dater second. Cox was the 38-year-old head of public relations for Lonely Planet when she decided to give her usual globe-trotting itinerary a twist: "Rather than traveling to recover from Mr. Wrong, what if I went traveling to find Mr. Right?" She assembled a "Relationship Résumé" (listing her own romantic history) and a "Soul Mate Job Description" (outlining the position she was looking to fill) and distributed them to a global network of "Date Wranglers," who then tracked down eligible suitors around the world. Cox met 80 men in 18 countries over a period of eight months—an impressive logistical feat, especially compared to her television counterparts, who never seem to leave their hot tubs. Her dates ranged from bizarre (recalcitrant William, whom she met at the Nobel Museum in Stockholm) to exhilarating (Olivier, who gives her a moonlit tour of Paris), but they were rarely boring. Best of all, Cox's entertaining quest for love gives readers a look at places they may not see otherwise, including Juliet's balcony in Verona and a whimsical theme park in rural Holland. Does Cox live happily ever after? Armchair travelers and diehard romantics will speed through this unique memoir to find out. Agent, Lizzy Kremer at David Higham Associates. (Apr.)

4.0 out of 5 stars From Los Angeles to Sweden to New Zealand..., May 20, 2005
This review is from: Around the World in 80 Dates (Paperback)
I love reading books about traveling and dating - especially when based on a true story. I knew this book fit into both categories and was based on the author's non-fictional account of how she found her true love.

"Around the World in 80 Dates" starts off in the UK where Jennifer is fresh from her latest heartbreak, and takes the reader from beginning to end. You will learn how she conceived of her "Around the World in 80 Dates" idea; You will be taken vicariously through each of her sometimes odd but often interesting dates; You'll see how she ends up meeting "the one"; and much more.

There were definitely some dates that stood out in the book: the handsome, overly confident Frank in Holland; William from Sweden who ended up expecting something from the date that Jennifer wasn't prepared to give him; the good-looking and enigmatic Olivier from France who didn't give Jennifer something she wanted; Davide, who was already happily devoted to a dead woman; Garry from Seattle who she meets at the Burning Man Festival in the hot deserts of Nevada; and many more. Through it all Jennifer has to juggle jet lag, constant travel, coordinating future dates, and keeping in touch with the friends and family who want to know what is going on.

"Around the World in 80 Dates" was an engaging and fast-moving read that I really enjoyed up until the part where Jennifer seems to find her true love. From there, the story line went sort of downhill. Although she remains determined to carry out her "80 dates" plan, she isn't as enthusiastic, and all she can think about is the man she's fallen in love with. (Not that I could blame her!) But the last fourth of the book was very slow-going and I had to force myself to finish it.

The best thing about this book is getting to go along with Jennifer on her many dates in all kinds of exotic places - from Los Angeles to Sweden to Asia - and many places in between.

Overall, I would recommend this novel to travel and chick lit fans, and anyone who is curious what it is like going on a bunch of first dates. I certainly hope there is more non-fiction chick lit to come from Downtown Press!

1.0 out of 5 stars Rambling Path to True Love, September 28, 2005
This review is from: Around the World in 80 Dates (Paperback)
I found her style of writing clumsy, tired and long winded. She is not a polished writer.

I guess you can admire her steadfastness to complete her mission to date 80 men despite having found The One earlier on. That's when the plot gets very dry as she seems to go thru the rest of her dating spree in a trance without any joy or open mindedness to discover other people. She seems to write off every men after finding The One with very quick strokes.

The rest of the men were portrayed to look like pathetic fools wanting to date her rather than she being gratified that they were still happy to date her after she made it clear that she had met The One.

It was a disappointment to find out that it was not a cross-cultural, cross-ethnic dating experience. She went after Caucasian men only. So, why the pretense in dating 80 men around the world??? I don't think u need to travel around the world for that. Europe & States would suffice.

I think there are better stories out there on dating than this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring!, February 26, 2006
By
Janice (Arlington, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Around the World in 80 Dates (Paperback)
Jennifer Cox, a travel journalist decided to travel around the world in search of her soul mate. After having survived a breakup, Jennifer felt that she couldn't find someone in English worthy enough to spend the rest of her life wife, she contacted some friends from all over the world to set her up with a date whom they felt would be a good match for her. Those friends also let the word out and soon, Jennifer found herself having many many dates set up. She travelled to Asia, Europe and the U.S. in search of her soul mate.

The premise of the book was promising enough but unfortunately, the book was lacking in substance. It was interesting enough to read about her first ten dates but soon, as a reader, I found myself getting quite dull by her description of dates. Initially, I thought this was a travelogue and that the author would have provided information about the culture or the places that she was going to. Unfortunately, it consisted mostly of her whirlwind dating. In addition, there were hardly any plots as it was mostly, she travelled to a particular place to meet someone, she did subsequently, and the next day, travelled to another country for another date. It was definitely not engaging at all.
