Editorial Reviews

Review

"If you like learning about the knitting traditions, motifs and inspirations of different countries around the world, you're sure to enjoy Around the World in Knitted Socks...This book would make a great gift for a sock knitter or someone who is interested in knitting history and traditions. It's also just a pretty book that's sure to inspire knitters -- sock knitters and non-sock knitters alike -- by illustrating the wide range of techniques and motifs in the wide world of knitting." - About.com Knitting

"Stephanie Van Der Linden has created a fabulous collection of foot-sized knitted treasures that will inspire and tempt socks knitters as they flip through its pages." - Knitty.com

"Make room on your sock book shelf for Stephanie van der Linden's Around the World in Knitted Socks, previously seen on this blog in the original German. I'm so excited that English speaking knitters can now see Stephanie's genius in familiar terms." - Twist Collective

"A top-down sock knitter looking for sophisticated, fun, and challenging patterns will want to take this book home for sure!" - Knit Circus

"If I was a faster knitter, I'd have a drawer full of these already, but until then, I'll be paging through and sighing at the lovely photos and descriptions. - Austen Gilliland, Canadian Living

"If you like to learn about new cultures and have a passion for sock knitting, hotfoot it... and order a copy of this book now." - Knit Today (Dec. 2010 Issue)

"Elements of national costume appear alongside beautiful folk patterns, but it's exotic touches such as the Sashiko embroidery on the Japanese sock that set these designs apart. Offering clear advice on the advanced techniques used, this is a delight for the confident heel-turner." - The Knitter (UK)

"The designs are gorgeous. They strike the perfect balance of being both unique, and recognizable enough to associate with the country they represent...I think the true value of this book is in the colorwork patterns. It's not just the use of more than a single color of yarn that's noteworthy; it's the addition of complementary cuffs and heels, interesting gusset shaping... all the details that take a stitch pattern and turn it into a complete sock pattern." - Grumperina blog

From the patterns I have read, it looks well written and easy to adjust the patterns.

With so much focus on books for beginner knitters, I'm very grateful there are still a few publishers producing books that appeal to experienced knitters.

With so much focus on books for beginner knitters, I'm very grateful there are still a few publishers producing books that appeal to experienced knitters. I am passionate about stranded color knitting so I'm thrilled 16 of the 26 designs in this book are colorwork socks. Around the World in Knitted Socks includes patterns from traditional knitting locales like Scotland and Norway but also patterns inspired by Italy and Switzerland.

Most of the patterns are cuff-down and she uses some fun techniques like mock argyles knit with short rows instead of intarsia, knitted braids, embroidery, sideways construction, traveling stitches, and beads. It has been many years since I've seen a book that offered so many stranded sock patterns I want to make.

This is just a great book. A friend brought to our knitting group last week and I just had to have one immediately! From patterned to color , there are patterns from many many countries, some we normally think of as knitting countries, and some I wouldn't have thought of. A must have book for those addicted sock knitters!

Beautiful patterns, excellent cross-cultural cross section of patterning motifs. Will undoubtedly appeal to experienced sock knitters, and lovers of stranded knitting. This is a book that should be in the serious sock knitter's library.

I found the patterns misleading. The author left out or made too many mistakes in the instructions. I have been knitting socks for 40 years and was disappointed with this book. Although beautifully illustrated, just too many errors.

At last a sock knitting book I love. These are socks to wear, not hide under your pants. Fabulous designs where often the underside of the sock is as important as the upper. This book is a delight from heel to toe. There's only a couple of patterns I wasn't fond of, the rest I adore. Here's to knitting a pair of socks a fortnight, this book will keep me going all year! I love the theme, the socks, the instructions and techniques. This book first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

This book is chock full of sock patterns, each one prettier than the last. Some are complicated enough that I had to turn off the TV and actually pay attention. But the results are perfect. Patterns and graphs are also perfect: without error anywhere. I like this book!

All of the designs are so lovely, I can't make up my mind which one to start with first. Each design has it's own intro on where they come from. Gorgeous pics, easy instructions, and how to in the back pages

As yet another book for socks, this one has a fair assortment of patterns. It assumes that you know how to do the basic knitting, so might not be a book for a true beginner.
