Book Description

November 1, 2005
Trace your family heritage or memorialize a vacation to an exotic locale with this dynamic collection of quilting designs. Inspired by world-wide civilizations of the past and present, both angular and flowing quilting motifs feature an abundance of unique cultural flair. A doctor in anthropology and an experienced designer of quilting patterns, Joyce Mori combines these two passions to transform interesting objects into patterns for your original quilts. The motifs are inspired by a fascinating array of sources from 20,000 BC to the twentieth century, such as an Egyptian mummy case, marble floors of Venetian churches, Native American stamped pottery, a dyed moose hair design on Canadian moccasins, a South Carolina wrought iron railing, an Eskimo wood mask, and Australian aboriginal art. A few continuous-line designs have been included for longarm machine quilters. Some designs can be adapted to redwork-type embroidery and hand or machine applique. Some can even be scanned into your computer, then converted to machine embroidery motifs.

Editorial Reviews

Review

...This wonderful new book of designs taken from around the world and throughout history will inspire quilting and applique, and beadwork, and embroidery, and maybe even stencilling. The designs come from Borneo to Norway, from the Bronze Age to the 1890s, from pottery, cloth, carved wood, metal work. Many are shown in more than one arrangement, some have been developed into continuous line designs good for machine quilting. All the designs are broken outlines, to suggest hand quilting..-E. Rice

About the Author

Joyce received a National Quilting Association grant to study the use of Native American designs by quilters. This study directly led to Joyce writing five books. She has now written over a dozen books and 70 articles on quilting subjects. Quilting appeals to Joyce for the aspects of encouraging creativity, playing with color combinations, learning new techniques, observing all the wonderful quilts made by quilters, and enjoying non-harmful sensory overload.

i cannot tell you how impressed i am with joyce mori's work. i have two of her other books, which are also inspiring.

this wonderful new book of designs taken from around the world and throughout history will inspire quilting and applique, and beadwork, and embroidery, and maybe even stencilling.

the designs come from borneo to norway, from the bronze age to the 1890s, from pottery, cloth, carved wood, metal work. many are shown in more than one arrangement, some have been developed into continuous line designs good for machine quilting. all the designs are broken outlines, to suggest hand quilting. this particular volume does not have finished examples of quilting or applique.

this is a fantastic resource for any designer on any level, not just quilters.

I love Joyce Mori's work, but even discounting that, this books offers fresh designs of interest to sewers, quilters, painters, beaders and those doing embroidery that are ethnic in nature yet fresh and defined. They invite and even leave room for customization. I could also see these designs painted on furniture and clothing...
