Great Veg Cookbook!, October 13, 2004
This review is from: Around the World with Vegetarian Sandwiches and Wraps (Paperback)
I was given this great cookbook as a gift, and it turned out to be one I pull off the shelf to use a lot. Most of the sandwiches take less than 15 minutes to prepare, taste delicious, and my nieces and nephews even like them (A miracle!)
The color photographs are great, and the color-coded layout and recipes are easy to follow. The book has recipes from around the world, and they're organized by type: hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, kids' sandwiches, wraps, etc.
I highly recommend it, especially since it gets kids to eat vegetables!

Delicious, Fresh Ideas, January 8, 2010
This review is from: Around the World with Vegetarian Sandwiches and Wraps (Paperback)
I have made several of the recipes in this book and have been more than satisfied with them all. My favorites so far are the Hot & Sweet Sandwich and Oriental Wrap. The Gorgonzola Triangles were also excellent. I diced the onions first before I carmelized them so they would be easier to eat. This is my current go to book for delicious recipes. I highly recommend this wonderful book. There are so many recipes that I still look forward to making.

Not the book I was hoping for, August 26, 2006
This review is from: Around the World with Vegetarian Sandwiches and Wraps (Paperback)
I really wanted to like this book, especially since the author is from the San Francisco Bay Area. I bought this book to help me come up with some quick, delicious, novel recipes for kids' lunches and dinners. I did get a few ideas, but found the recipes irritating to deal with.
I was disappointed in 3 areas. First, the ingredients list is imprecise. For example, I tried the Greek Salad Sandwich. It calls for 1/4 c chopped olives -- would those be kalamata, black, or green? No hints. I guess you are supposed to know enough about cooking to figure that out for yourself, but I prefer a more descriptive list of ingredients.
Also irritating is the system of measurement. Who has time time to measure out 1 cup of cucumber or 1 cup of chopped tomatoes. MUCH more useful would have been 1/2 cucumber, or 1 tomato. I am an experienced cook, and can figure these things out, but I guess I am a lazy cook and want easy quick measurements that I don't have to think about.
The other thing that I found irritating was the types of breads called for in the wraps. I like to pick up tortilla style wraps, which come in all kinds of interesting flavors, like tomato and spinach and are widely available. However, most of the wrap recipes call for lavash, which is expensive and hard to come by at your local Safeway. The photos don't show nice neatly wrapped lavashes that would be easy for a kid to eat, but weird, squared off things that would necessitate a fork and a knife to eat properly.
Oh, and I guess there's another thing: why is there no section showing how to actually wrap a wrap? Would have been nice to describe the optimal way to stuff and roll a wrap.
Right before I bought this book, I saw another book just called "Wraps", which still featured many vegetarian recipes. It looked very good, showed how to make a neat wrap (I actually didn't know how to do it until I looked at that book!) but I was drawn to the vegetarian recipes is "Around the World". Now I would have bought the other one!
The good things about the book are the variety of recipes -- they really are from around the world -- and the lovely photos.
