About the Author
Shortly thereafter, he moved to Santiago, Chile and obtained a degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from the School of Architecture at the Catholic Pontifical University of Santiago, Chile. From 1963 to 1968 he held a professorship with the School of Architecture , Art and Design and taught course in Desciptive Geometry at the University. In 1960s Villarroel designed Santiagos El Caracol de Providencia, Chiles first commercial center in the form of a spiral.
After participating in various internationa competitions in Spain and after winning a competition to build Hotel Puente Romano in Mabella, Villarroel decides to stay in the Costa del Sol and launches his own professional practice. In 1985 he receives a first-place award in recognition of internationally renown hotel service and creativity for Hotel Puente Romano and La Alcazaba Beach. In 1985, Villarroel recieves a first-place award for the landscape designs of La Alcazabas garden in the Costa del Sol. He is presented again with the same award for landscpae design both at La Alhambra del Mar in 1988 and Hotel Puente Romano in 1990. La Alcazaba Beach is presentedwith the first-place award in 1990 by the Town Council of Andalucia for landscape design and for integrating beauty and function. Also in 1990, the government of the Canary Islands presented the silver award to Hotel Jardn Tropical, in recognition of design excellence and its accomplishments for furthering tourism.it was the first time ever that this award was presented to a hotel. In 1993, at the Ninth Biennial Exhibition of Architecture in Chile, Villarroel received a honorary degree for the design of Los Pmpanos, in Santa Ponsa, Mallorca. In 1994, the town council of Marbella presented Villarroel with a distinguished award for integrating flora and architecture. In 1995, teh town council of Marbella bestowed Villarroel with the towns honorary title for improving the city of Marbella and promoting the worlds tourism capital with richness and wellbeing. This same year the proyect of Marina Puente Romano obtains the international award, among 80 other proyects from different countries for being the best tourist-residential complex.
