Book Description

1983
This book addresses itself to the needs of the composer/arranger who is interested in writing for small combinations (3-10 pieces) in jazz, rhythm and blues, and jazz-rock.

In many ways the writing for small combination is much more difficult than writing for the big band. In big bands, with complete sections of brass and saxophones, the task of combining orchestral colors is much less precarious. Problems such as creating the illusion of a brass section with 2 brass and 3 reeds, or getting a full chord sound with only three instruments is one problem usually endemic to a small group writing.

This book includes excerpts from small group arrangements, complete scores of recorded and published arrangements, musical examples, recommended recordings, and suggested outside reading. It also provides many of the compositional tools for the arranger, who also must be able to compose for small musical ensembles.
