I purchased this voice modem to avoid paying the $7 per month lease fee to comcast.

Unfortunately, comcast will not activate these modems. I advise against anyone purchasing this modem if your attempt is to use it for comcast voice service.

Despite information posted on their website, and information provided on the phone by several representatives, as it turns out, the only voice/phone modem for purchase that works with comcast (as of writing this review) is the Arris MT722G.

In addition, comcast will not activate the voice modem except those purchased at special best buy comcast locations. And comcast will not activate used modems.

Not all best buy locations work. Here is a list from the manufacturer of the modem:

[...]

The cost is $150! And when I called the Dublin Best Buy location, I was told that they are sold out at all locations for over a month, and to call back in a week or two...

Apparently comcast makes it very, very hard to avoid paying the $7 per month lease fee on phone modems.

So I bought this one and tried to hook it up with comcast apparently they can set you up with this exact model, but you cannot go and buy this one and setup it up to work with comcast. They want you to buy the more expensive one they are selling with Best Buy for $150. The TM722G ENTA

The modem as advertised and delievered was perfect. Fast shipping and the product was just about brand new. But apparently (according to comcast) the only modem you can buy that works on comcast, you have to buy at a best buy store. Sort of does not make sense becasue on the comcast site they list this modem as compatable. Believe me their must be some sort of a hardware updgrade that comcast is not telling peopple about, because after 3 visits to the local comcast service center and hours on the phone and on-line with comcast tech support. Everyone at comcast has a diffrent opinion of what works and what doesn't. i ended up returning the modem and re-renting one from comcast so i could get back on line and have my home phone again.
only three stars for the vendor as i have not heard back from them on my refund in a couple of weeks. They were very helpful and friendly when contacted though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comcast Will Accept This Modem If......, November 5, 2011

Comcast Will Accept This Modem If. They have not outdated it. I bought this and hooked mines up on the web in 5 min, a screen pops up. First, you have to call Comcast in your area, give them the Model Number and find out if its become out of date.
To make it simple, I called Comcast, asked them if this modem is acceptable first, before I bought it, and they said yes. For certain areas its can be used, for others it can not, it depends on where you live, so call first.
Comcast has what is called DOCSIS this is the level your area of living is at, DOCSIS 3 being the most advanced area, this modem is a DOCSIS 2, meaning its becoming out of date, if you live in an area where they only do DOCSIS 3 you can not hook up a DOCSIS 2 modem because it has become to old, and won't work on the new network. So call first, to see if you can still hook up a DOCSIS 2 modem in your area, giving them the model number, that's what you have do.
I bought this one because I want to be able to change my IP address, and with the newer modems you can't, so I bought this older one.

Installation was easy and fast. I called Comcast and furnished the requested equipment IDs. The cable tv and data service started working immediately. I was told that it may take up to 24 hours for the phone servive to be functional. However, it didnt take that long and witin 30 minutes it was up and functional. So far it's working great.

I spent 37 dollars to buy a used modem from Amazon warehouse. This is the same model as the one I have from Comcast. I then called Comcast to replace their modem with this one. The process was extremely easy. They need the CMAC address from the modem to register it with my account. Then they walked me through the provision/reset process. The person helping me was extremely professional and friendly. After ten to twenty minutes, I am free from the $7.00 monthly rental fee!!! I just cannot believe that I have been paying monthly rental fees for almost ten years now.

I don't know why some reviewers say it is not working especially for the one reviewer in Fremont, CA, who posted his review three months earlier. I live not very far away from there. You do not need the more expensive model, TM722G (DOCSIS 3.0) as one reviewer claims you need. TM502G is of DOCSIS 2.0 and supports up to 40 mbps. If the internet speed you buy is less than that, then this modem is more than enough.

The only complaint I have is that the modem is not "like new". It is actually very worn out. But I guess I cannot ask too much for so very little money I paid. I can recover the cost in five months. After that, I am saving the rental fee month by month. For that, I am very happy.

This product was very easy to install. My cable company worked with me to ensure that this product worked as it should. With the installation of this product, I no longer have to pay Comcast for a modem resulting in a savings over time.

I wanted to post a review to let people know that I also purchased this to save myself $7/mo with Comcast. The modem arrived quickly - was very well packaged and just as I expected. I contacted Comcast, provided them with the serial number and other identification for the modem - they were able to activate it and within an hour or so all of my services (internet and telphone) were functioning normally. So, I'm returning my leased modem to Comcast and I'm a very happy customer! Wish I would have done this ages ago!
