Book Description

March 30, 2000
Nazca, once an isolated settlement in the midst of the Peruvian desert, is today the meeting place for archaeologists from around the world. From here you can fly over the celebrated Nazca pampa & appreciate the massive scale of the extraordinary markings on the surrounding landscape. Some of these lines are nearly 15 miles long! Von Daniken examines the various theories which attempt to explain the Nazca phenomena in terms of religious ritual, ancient roads & astrological symbols. With the help of numerous photos taken by the author, he describes the many mysteries of Nazca & puts forward a startling revolutionary solution to one of archaeology's greatest enigmas. Photos.

Amazon.com Review

In the 1970s, Erich von Däniken sparked a wave of public and scientific debate with Chariots of the Gods?, which postulated that certain archaeological sites pointed to earthly visits by extraterrestrials in the predawn of human history. Since then his ideas have been both attacked as ludicrous and praised as genius, but Däniken himself steers a middle course and simply maintains that his theory is the logical conclusion to be drawn from the evidence. In his latest book, Arrival of the Gods, Däniken returns to South America in search of further proof supporting his ideas, but instead of regurgitating photos and measurements of the familiar scratch drawings on the Nazca plain, he flies to the Palpa mountains, where he finds his evidence, among other things, in the form of giant mandalas and an enormous grid of lines that closely resembles the landing aids found in modern airports. Color photographs of Däniken's discoveries burst from the pages of Arrival of the Gods, accompanied by prose that barely contains his contagious excitement over these striking earthworks. Anyone who has previously dismissed Däniken's work out of hand should beware: there is much more going on here than the odd prattlings of a single subversive author. --Brian Patterson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, thought-provoking photos, not enough discussion, April 28, 1999
By A Customer
For almost 30 years, von Daniken has been a pain in the neck of "serious'' scholars of Man's history. His ancient astronaut theory has won him many critics but he keeps coming back time and again for more. What's interesting about this book is the wealth of photos about Nasca that have never been published elsewhere before - some are truly breathtaking and defy all logical explanation. Having been to Nasca myself, I can testify that few people would know of some of these images - everyone only wants to see the spider, hummingbird, moneky etc. The main problem with the book is that the discussion about reasons for these drawings is weak, since von Daniken says they were done by the natives of the region for the gods to enjoy. Still, this at least is better than some of the conventional explanations by "serious'' scholars, some of which are laughable. Whether you believe in alien visitations or not, read this book with an open mind and remember one important thing - these drawings could only have been appreciated from high up in the air, which is a point von Daniken's critics conveniently gloss over.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Photos and Wild Surmise in "Arrival of the Gods", March 24, 1999
i first read Von Daniken in 1972 and becamse fascinated with the subject matter of E.T. visitations to the planet earth. in this 1999 opus, VonDaniken returns to the mysterious plains of Nazca where he first publicized the enigmatic ramps, runways, and animal facsimiles , all of which were carved into dry red rock and visible only from above in this truly God-forsaken arid landscape south of Lima Peru. Now, hanging out of the passenger side of a small aircraft he has taken spectacular photos , some of which boggle the mind, of geometric designs of kilometer size, in this vast lonely wasteland. There are 150 such photos liberally sprinkled throughout the text. If you can get beyond his sometimes arrogant treatment of dissenting opinion, the book is a "must" for those who believe , or even dispute, that planet earth was the subject of alien visitations for centuries. 5.0 out of 5 stars Enthralling and compelling new evidence, January 21, 2001
By
Erich Von Daniken has done it again with his new and exciting book on Nazca. Through times of rebuttal of things said about him in the past, Von Daniken keen intellect and perceptions of the Nazca keep the reader riveted to his astounding new evidence.ARRIVAL OF THE GODS presents even more evidence that you must view Nazca from the air. But why, Erich Von Daniken proves that the latest theories about the line are astoundingly outrageous. Nazca lines have to be seen from the air, but who was able to see them, so many years ago, is really the question.
