4.0 out of 5 stars For any fan of the Great Detective, May 8, 2004
I must admit that I am a devoted Sherlock Holmes fan and that is the only reason why I ever ran into Maurice LeBlanc. I was reading an excellant book of Holmes parodies edited by Ellery Queen titled "The Misadventures of Sherlock Holmes" when I fell upon a short story about a thief named Arsene Lupin. The parody caught my attention and I immediately got ahold of "Arsene Lupin versus Holmlock Shears". I wasn't dissapointed. Of all the Arsene Lupin novels LeBlanc wrote, this one is definately the best and should be followed up by its semi-sequel "The Hollow Needle". Arsene Lupin is of the so-called gentleman thief genre to which Raffles belongs. The only downside to these Arsene Lupin books is sometimes the quality of translation from the original French. "Arsene Lupin versus Holmlock Shears" is translated pretty skillfully, but I will warn you that other translators have not done the rest of the Arsene Lupin series justice. I would recommend this book highly to anyone who enjoys a good Holmesian parody or is a fan of E.W. Hornung's "Raffles" series.
