Editorial Reviews

"What are we now? We are the change!" is an essential line in DEADLOCK's "The Final Storm" and can be regarded as the red thread when it comes to their sixth album, The Arsonist. After a line-up change, another chapter opens in the book of DEADLOCK. A chapter that couldn't be more electrifying and thrilling. The mix of Melodic Death Metal and elements from the world of Pop has reached a new level of maturity and depth of detail. The Arsonist is once more a testament to the band's grasp of pure heaviness and catchy melodies.

New vocalist, new label, new Deadlock. Honestly though, Deadlock have been on a continual progression towards more modern material since Sabine joined full-time with Wolves so it should be no surprise that with the departure of harsh vocalist, Johannes Prem, the band has continued to modernize their sound. Unfortunately, the changes that have occurred this time around bring the band into areas where debate will stem between fans of their older and newer material. Being in the camp that is a bit disppointed with this release, this isn't the first time I feel like I have been burned by Deadlock. Manifesto felt stale and uninspired yet kept with the band's sound and progression (though there was that horrid rap song), but Bizarro World felt like a comeback to their brand of melodic death metal laced with electronics and poppy female vocals albeit a slightly more modern form.

There are several key things that have kept me from truly enjoying The Arsonist. The first is the guitar tone, which kicks in immediately with "The Great Pretender". Deadlock have always had some lower tunings on the guitars, but here it almost 'djent' low and distracting. Not to mention the continued "modernization" of the band and their gradual decrease of melodic leads and flashy solos they pulled off so well in the Earth.Revolt/Wolves-era. I cannot think of a single riff that I wanted to hear again after listening to the entire disc. The second major problem is the absence of Johannes Prem. They quickly recruited then bassist John Gahlert after Prem's departure and he simply cannot fill those shoes. Prem's menacing growl meshed perfectly with Sabine Scherer's angelic singing and Gahlert's mid-range throaty rasps just don't have the same power or overall meshing with Scherer's cleans.

Someone who came from the pop side of music and slowly getting into heavier vocals, this is the perfect band to get into for me. The way the harsh vocals are mixed is a little different than most of the bands I have sampled that are similar in that they decided to keep the volume level of the vocals at a level that it does not over dominate the other instrument sounds. Perfect cd to get pumped to at the gym. If your a fan of the harder stuff there might be one or two songs you might not like on this album with sabine dominating vocals on a few. But if your ok with pop like I am than youll like all of them, and these days you can just pay for the songs you want so you don't have to like every song.

This is AWESOME METAL, AWESOME GERMAN METAL! What may be more metal than blood-heavy, pummeling instruments and Darthy-Screams, is the beautifully-threatening voice and piano of the female singer. This is a really fun, charging bull out of control ridden by a sexy villainess kinda album. BUY, PLAY, HAVE FUN, DONT EAT WHILE YOU LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE YOU WILL GET STOMACH PAINS!
