I don't even want to call this a game, it really isn't, it is a learning aid however. I want to describe some cool features I enjoyed. You have the ability to choose multiple media types(pencil, paint, etc), mix paints, wet area, choose different brushes, etc. That much is pretty standard fare. You also have the ability to save your pictures and place them on a gallery wall in the game, send them via street pass, or export them as a jpg on the sd card. I put the sd card in my digital camera and then imported the information from there. I'm sure there is an easier solution but that one worked for me. The other noteworthy option is the ability to take a photo from the sd card and use it as a reference for painting a picture in the game. Say you are going for a walk and decided to snap a photo and draw it on your ds. That is an option and it is an awesome functionality to have for free painting endeavors.
As for the lesson's themselves they really serve to introduce you to the painting techniques that will really help you in the long run. An example would be the first lesson, you use the tools to paint a cherry. It teaches you the techniques for easily creating a developed and well proportioned work of art. Another brilliant feature is the ability to use gridlines on both the reference and the drawing you are doing so you can ensure proper proportions.
Even if you don't do the lessons at all, it's still a great tool to have for creativity on the go but the lessons are well made and while they don't track how you actually draw they do guide you well enough to do a pretty good job on the first go. Definitely recommended.

Not sure what made me buy this as I have never been into drawing or art, but I did and have not been able to put it down since. Coming from someone who can't draw anything this "game" if you can call it that does teach you to draw/paint. The tutorials are long but you can just click through them if you get inpatient. So glad I bought it

44 year old guy here.
Note that I'm a horrible artist, but have always wanted to be able to draw. My mom's "doodles" had a certain .. flair .. to them and I was always jealous.
I got this and am amazed. I actually bought a 3ds XL just to be able to use this better (more space to draw.) If you spend any time on it all all, you'll learn a ton of theory and history (totally cool) but you'll also make amazing paintings that you wouldn't be able to unless someone was holding your hand like Vincent does. Please note nothing is "done" for you, it's all you, but the step by step instructions are amazing. I've purchased every DLC to date (2 bux a pop for things like "a church at night in the style of Van Gogh") and have enjoyed them all.
BONUS! It just occurred to me a few days ago that youtube has tons of people teaching you how to paint "XXXXX", so I've been having a ball going up there and trying those paintings on the 3DS. It doesn't translate perfectly (no painting knife or ability to not mix paints fully, missing brushes, etc..) but I've done even challenging paintings (rocks made with knife edge and not-fully mixed paints) with great results. You can also dump them to the 3DS's SD card and print them from a computer to display them.

I have a few games for my 3DS, but they are all but ignored. This "game" was worth the purchase of the 3DS for me.

When I first played the Art Academy game for the DS, I had already been familiar with drawing and painting somewhat, but I still learned a lot from the game. It helped me to overcome my hesitation with painting, and taught me that it's ok to be loose and carefree with your brush strokes (which allows you to capture more energy in your creations). My only gripe with it was that it was too short.

But now the 3DS game comes packed with many more new lessons to teach anyone how to both sketch and paint. The instructor is thorough and straight-forward with his lessons and guides you step by step so you're not left feeling lost on what to do or how to do it. There are two sets of lessons: introductory and advanced. If you're already familiar with foundations, you can skip right ahead to the advanced courses if you want to. If you're new, going through the introductory courses will teach you many important basic skills and guidelines, and move you in the right direction in your new hobby.

While this game provides well for those totally new to drawing and painting, it's still a worthy pick-up for the experienced. The worst thing that could happen is that you get a refresher on the basics and some extra practice.

I got this for my 9 year old daughter for Chrismas. She loves to painting. She just loves it! Step by step techniques!
She still prefers to paint on paper but, when we are on the road, it has been perfect for her.

I thought I would be getting something that would have simple art lessons for kids and basically a portable art program on my 3DS. This "game" has improved my art from the first lesson and has so much replayability it's crazy. You can even make your own virtual art gallery (something I didn't know before my purchase) and then your friends can visit it and you can visit theirs. The tools have great variety (sketching, painting, pastels, coloring pencils, etc) and a mixing paint system for custom made colors. The music is relaxing and the "models' you draw can be seen from different angles and move just enough to show they are real but not too much to make drawing difficult. A must have for anyone interested in art or who needs some relaxation.
