Book Description

April 27, 2007
"Art in America" is a stunning celebration of American art from colonial times to the present day. Divided into six historical periods, it examines how the art of each era both reflected and contributed to a complex visual narrative of a nation during times of discovery, growth and experimentation. Featuring a superb selection of over 250 iconic and little-known images, this book is a fascinating exploration of how the cultural, political, ethnic, economic and natural landscape of America has shaped national identity and consciousness. An accessible introduction to the major movements in American art, from the Hudson River and Ashcan schools to Abstract Expressionism, Pop art and beyond, "Art in America" features works by a diverse range of artists, from John Singleton Copley, Winslow Homer and Mary Cassatt to Thomas Hart Benton, Jackson Pollock, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Matthew Barney.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine survey of the major movements in America art, July 7, 2007
This review is from: Art in America: 300 Years of Innovation (Hardcover)
Susan Davidson edits ART IN AMERICA: 300 YEARS OF INNOVATION, a fine survey of the major movements in America art which will be a top pick not just for college-level art libraries, but for any collection strong in American art history, even down to the high school range. From pop art to expressionism and landscape artists, here are works - some 250 - reproduced in full color by a range of artists. The historical division into six major periods from colonial times to modern times offers a far wider range than most American art titles, and makes for a fine, definitive catalog.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Art Book to Give as a Gift, November 16, 2008

This review is from: Art in America: 300 Years of Innovation (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful review of American Art. It was actually the catalogue issued with the first American Art Exhibition to travel in China. Therefore, to provide the best possible understanding of American Art to the Chinese it is very comprehensive. It was originally given to me as a gift and since them I have given it a number of times as gifts to many of my American Art collector friends. It is worthwhile addition to the library of anyone either interested in or a collector of American Art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Art in America, October 23, 2010

This review is from: Art in America: 300 Years of Innovation (Hardcover)
This is a good general text for American art. Lots of illustrations and good, specific definitions. It was also a great value. Even though not a current copyright, the information is up to date (2007.)
