Book Description

April 1997
Using various methods of embroidery, fabric-painting techniques and all kinds of textiles, Annemieke Mein demonstrates how to combine these skills to create a sculptural medium. Many of her textile studies of flora and fauna are illustrated in the book. The subjects Annemieke Mein works on are from the natural world - birds, frogs, blossoms and most often invertebrates, such as moths and dragonflies. Each work uses a wide variety of materials - silk, wool, cotton, synthetics - carefully chosen for their colour and texture. These fabrics are then painted and stitched to reproduce her chosen subjects and to enhance the tactile quality unique to textiles. Many techniques are used in various combinations - hand and machine embroidery, dyeing, applique, trapunto, quilting, pleating, felting, beading, weaving and plying. The author has explored beyong the bounds of crafts and developed new techniques, which, combined with her sense of colour and composition, show how textiles can be used as a scuptural medium. This book should be of interest to all those working with textiles, and all forms of needlecrafts, fabric painting and soft sculpture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Art of Annemieke Mein: Wildlife Artist in Textiles, July 18, 2000

This book is absolutely breathtaking! The art alone is worth buying the book for. The ideas this lady generates with her views of nature will get your creative juices flowing so much that before you know it you'll be outside hunting down bugs and drawing them. My dogs get frustrated with me because instead of walking them as I used to I now stop every few feet to look at an insect or the odd-shaped leaf or grass, etc. I would recommend this book as THE greatest art/craft/fiberart book ever and this compliment isn't given lightly. I have many, many beautiful craft books but this one is the BEST!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonder For the Eyes, May 11, 2004

This is the most extrodinary book of Textile Art I've ever seen. You can look at it then look again and not see all of it. It has simplity and emmence detail at the same time. The photography has been well done. And to think this artist began her journey 30 years ago when this kind of fibre art was not even heard of. The colors she uses are peaceful and earthy. A joy to look at. I have read it many times yet still I am thrilled and inspired when I read it again. A must for any fibre artist's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Art of Annemieke Mein: Wildlife Artist in Textiles, September 26, 2005
I am a self-taught quilter and have taught machine quilting for over 7 years. I have read many books on the subject of quilting and have never seen such beauty come from fabric, thread, and machine. There is so much more that I personally wish to accomplish and this book has the ability to take me to a new level of inspiration. Even if you are not a fiber artist this is a book worth having in your collection.
