Balancing the score,

The other review, while glowing, gives a very low score: 1. I cannot understand such a low score with such a glowing review, so I submit this vote to balance the score a bit.

If you're into car modeling and are familiar with Gerald Wingrove, you know that any books by or about him are very worthwhile. He has worked in 1/15th scale on classic cars and his skills and workmanship approach perfection. They are in a class by themselves. This book is excellent and loaded with color photos of his models, many of which are near the model's actual size. Studying the models' phenomenal details is fascinating. It's not a how-to book, but describes the processes and stages of scratch-building these classics. The book's a great read and a treat that can be enjoyed more than once!

Gerald Wingrove is a master creator of automotive miniatures. This book does an outstanding job of presenting a representative sample of his work and methods. The content, layout, photography and printing are all excellent.

Major Caveat,

This review is from: Art of the Automobile in Miniature (Hardcover)
While I am very impressed with the author's modeling skills, patience and abilities, I am disappointed in the book from the standpoint of someone wanting to learn modeling technique. I will never in several liftimes be able to duplicate the work shown in the book and the book does very little to encourage or improve my meager modeling skills. This is not a "How To" book other than for, perhaps, a very elite range of extremely skilled people.

A consumate modeler shares his talent with us,

This is the third and hopefully not the last from Gerald Wingrove. He has retired from the model building world after contributing to us, the modelers, his absolute mastery and methods in producing 1:15 scale masterpieces. For those of us who would aspire to become master modelers, this is a wonderful read. I have gleaned so much because Mr. Wingrove has unselfishly shared his methods with all. If you have ever constructed any type of model and are aiming for higher goals in model making, this book is for you.
In his first two books, "The Complete Car Modeler, and "The Complete Car Modeler 2" Mr. Wingrove takes you down the path of what he does to produce such masterpieces. I was rapt and have read them from cover to cover several times, each time picking up new tidbits that has helped me in my quest to become a better modeler. In this third book, "Art of the Automobile in Minature", Mr. Wingrove shares the story of his life in modeling, from the beginning as a young man, giving you a view of his early years and the first projects that he produced. The formative years. As you progress through the book, marveling at these beautiful masterpieces, it is almost impossible to believe that they are "Minatures" in 1:15th scale. The way Mr. Wingrove stages them for photos leaves you to believe that they are full sized automobiles. Such is the Master Artisian at his craft. In closing, this book captures not only the captivating art of the modeler, but your imiganiation as to what can be achieved with the right talent, dilligence, and planning. A must in the collection of any serious or aspiring modeler or any one who loves to see art in minature. A most enjoyable read. |
