Editorial Reviews

Review

Just as museums preserve works representative of the artistic creation of a specific era, so this video is conceived as a museum of the dance, designed to safeguard the fruits of years of Baroque dance research for future generations. --Jean Marie Bruson, Curator, Musée Carnavalet, Museums of Paris

Product Description

The famous music and dance of Folies d Espagne are comprised of short, highly expressive pieces. Each variation reveals an individual temperament that inspired its choreography. With this video, viewers can uncover secrets of dance interpretation, savor its beauty, and better understand the unique relationship between dance and music in the French Baroque style. Rich and entertaining, it provides an in-depth view of the artistic process of bringing Baroque dance alive for generations to come. Gorgeously layered with a wealth of historic architectural and artistic images, the video exemplifies five important characteristics of French Baroque dance: dance notation, treatment of space, arm embellishments, relation to music, and interpretation by the individual dancer. The Art of Baroque Dance: Folies d Espagne from Page to Stage DVD presents the most important elements that enable us to understand, appreciate, and explore the preservation of Baroque dance. Available in French and English.

5.0 out of 5 stars One-of-a-kind DVD presentation, April 10, 2007
This review is from: The Art of Baroque Dance: Folies d'Espagne From Page to Stage (DVD)
Produced in France and featuring both English and French audio tracks, The Art of Baroque Dance: Folies d'Espagne from Page to Stage is a stellar survey of the nuances of traditional 17th century dance, as it has been preserved and practiced up to the modern day. Historical and architectural images intersperse this wondrously informative examination of Baroque dance notation, treatment of space, arm embellishments, relation to music, and interpretation of the dancer. Director and choreographer Natalie Van Parys applies her years of experience in Baroque dance companies in this one-of-a-kind DVD presentation enthusiastically recommended for anyone interested in the rich cultural history of Baroque dance. 45 minutes, color.
