Book Description

January 2000
A striking and unusual boardbook which teaches children their body parts via pieces of contemporary art by acclaimed artists, with short accompanying text that describes each artwork for the adult reader. For example, a graceful wire sculpture by Alexander Calder shows two acrobat artists. The stomach of one of the acrobats, which features a fabulous belly-button, is then extracted and reproduced on the opposite page with the word "Stomach." Children adore matching the body parts together - as well as the diverse and beautiful artworks. The word "Stomach" is also translated into Spanish, French, German and Japanese. A few sentences are given for the adult reader that describe Calder's work. Twelve body parts are featured, as listed below. They represent pieces by the masters of contemporary art to emerging leaders; women and men; people of many backgrounds.

Mouth - one of the classic "girl" painting by Roy Lichtenstein

Eye - an amusing, but always telling, work by Barbara Kruger

Nose - a fun photograph of his dogs by William Wegman

Ear - a striking self-portrait by Frida Kahlo

Hair - a intriguing photograph by Cindy Sherman

Arm - a beautiful, gentle work by Carrie Mae Weems

Hand - an amusing sculpture of three boys by Red Grooms

Leg - a fabulous sculpture using televisions by Nam June Paik

Foot - an amazing sculpture of a girl by Duane Hanson

Stomach - an outstanding wire work by Alexander Calder

Back - a rich beach-scene photograph by Max Yavno

Buttocks - a bright, California pool painting by David Hockney The artworks are beautifully reproduced in full-color. The book is designed for little and big hands with 5" x 6" dimensions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A far cry from the dull art-history texts you dozed over in school, these whimsical board books use modern masterpieces---by Matisse, Lichtenstein, Warhol, and others---to introduce kids to colors, shapes, and parts of the body. Even the buttocks get their 15 minutes of fame in a David Hockney piece your preschooler is sure to find funny. The colorful trio provides a great simultaneous introduction to reading and the world of fine art. Who knows---they might even give the two of you something to talk about during your next museum trip. -- Parent's Magazine, February 1999

From the Publisher

This is the final book in the trilogy that also includes The Art of Shapes for Children and Adults and The Art of Colors for Children and Adults. The sales for this book were instantly strong, in part because there are so few books which teach children their body parts. Once again, every artist who was asked to participate agreed to be included in the book, showing the uniqueness and value of the book.

A portion of the proceeds from The Art of the Body for Children and Adults supports The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and its programs. The book was produced by Cecil B. Widdifield.

This review is from: The Art of the Body: For Children and Adults (Hardcover)
As an aspiring art historian and teacher, I found this bood to be incredibly inspiring for adults and children. What a fun way to bridge basic knowledge about the human body to contemporary art. This book takes the familiar and links it to new concepts. We can all relate to the information in this little gem of a book!
